Oh, and go ahead and splurge on the Concise Wadsworth. I think its only $20 bucks or something, and I refer to it time and time again for papers. It's got all the MLA stuff and it's a useful grammar reference.

Thanks BUBailey!

I didnt find some of the books in Amazon so just bought them "used" in BU Barnes. Now I regret doing this after reading your post.

i.e.

BU Barnes says:
1)
Title: America is in the Heart
Edition: 1975
Publisher: Hopkins F (cut out)
2)
Title: Walden and Civil Disobedience
Edition: 2000
Publisher: Cengage Learning

What I found:
First book: 1974 edition from University of Washington Press
Second book: Same publisher but 2004 edition.

Should I cancel my order from BU Barnes and get these instead in Amazon?

Ehhh depends how much you spent. As long as the Walden/Civil Disobedience book doesn't have extra material in it, I'd say you could find it at a used book store for 5 bucks. Don't know about the America is in the Heart...

But yeah, don't worry. I did the same thing my freshman year, then I wised up.

Shop around online but yes, you must have the same edition. Books are expensive everywhere. You might see if they have a used book sale during orientation. My D went to Carnegie Mellon and they did.

Thanks everyone! I got all my books now. I just hope I don't get screwed first week because I got a different edition or for some odd reason. :)

i've had really bad experiences buying stuff from amazon. i tried both semesters last year, used the isbn # and all (e-mailed the professors for the EXACT one incase b&n got it wrong somehow), and it was STILL the wrong version, wrong edition, wrong int'l type (wth? don't ask lol), or something. i think b&n used is your best bet, but order them early... or you won't get them come fall when you go to pick the up, and have to wait extra days =/

AAA (Auto Club) has some kind of discount deal with B&N...
Save 5% in addition to online discounts of up to 40%. AAA members save 10%
during certain date ranges (Aug. 18th to Sept. 1 I think).

Precocious you're making me worried now :/

As long as you carefully read the descriptions on Amazon or in the Amazon Marketplace, you shouldn't have a problem getting the right books. I saved over $500 last year buying books from places other than B&N. All new books. But if you're buying from the Amazon Marketplace, definitely check the seller's ratings. Don't pick a 3-star guy with only 2 ratings.

I bought all my books at amazon (except for those stupid SMG custom books) four all four years and I never had a problem. The one time that I got the wrong edition (which was becasue B&N had listed the wrong version) I just resold it for almost the same price I bought it for and got the correct one.

A good thing to do to double check that you're getting the correct book is to stop by B&N during orientation or when you move in and look at the cover. The covers on different editions are always different. I think the book ordering site might even have pictures of the books too? I'm not sure...

Now I'm kinda concerned. For EC 101 and IR 271, I'm not even sure if I have the correct books. For EC 101, I have The Undercover Economist, but others tell me I need Principles of Microeconomics (which is not listed in BN's list). Also, I have World Politics in a New Era, but some tell me it's World Politics: Trend and Transformation. AGH!

Which section are you in? I'm in A1 and my list says Principles of Microecon.

I'm in EC 101 C1 and my list just says Undercover Economist too. I assume we will need Principles of Microecon at some point, but maybe the professor just hasn't updated it.

Also, my listing for IR 271 says World Politics in a New Era w/Atlas.

Last year I had a friend in EC101 and her class didn't have a real book, but I think they had to buy access to an online book in addition to Aplia

What's really annoying is that when you buy via BU BN, the site states that amount due can change if a professor updates his/her list. So this might be the case for IR EC 101. Undercover Economist is just a novel, and I'm sure that we'll need a textbook sooner or later.

So what should I do? Because I can wait till school starts, but then I might be screwed cuz the professor might say that he updated his list. I would never know because I bought most of my books in AMAZON, not BU BN. What a pain.

OhNoItsHeather:
EC 101 - C1
IR 271 -A1

Oh, and anyone taking Statistics I?

What's the addition of your IR book? I used Trend and Transformation 9th edition last semester and it was the wrong edition. Maybe New Era is the right one? In any case....it won't really matter unless it's a reallllly old edition. I did just fine with a wrong edition that was just a few years off.

so what happens if we order the books and then the professor changes something to the list? does the BU bookstore automatically add it to your order and then charge you when you get there or is it something that we have to check every day to make sure everything is okay with our order?

^ regarding bite's question, yes they do automatically change it in your package when you go pick it up.

For EC101 (who is your professor? Idson? Manove? Watson?), you need Principles of Microeconomics by Mankiw Edition 4 probably, it's a green and white textbook -- that was the book we used last year. I had Idson so we didn't need to do Aplia, but had textbook problems instead. But most of the other profs (I know Manove does) require Aplia, which is this access key you need to do weekly problems online (which are graded). Check with which section/professor you have before buying your books, because you can buy the textbook w/o aplia or with aplia at B&N.

And don't be worried, lol. I probably just had bad experiences because I didn't read carefully enough or bought books w/o the right edition listed. I remember I also didn't use amazon, I used half.com :)

^^Ooh I have Idson this semester. I didn't know he didn't use Aplia. One less thing for me to buy! haha

I should've just bought all the books used via B&N? haha

precocious: I have WATSON for econ.

So far,

Econ --> "Principles of Micro" and "Undercover Economist"?
IR --> "World Politics in a New Era" (or Trend and Transformation?), "Classic Readings in Int'l Relations"

Is the list correct? I'm sorry if I'm being a psycho.

BUBailey: I guess wrong edition wouldn't matter that much as long as you are using the same textbook other classmates are using. The REAL problem would be when I use IN A NEW ERA when everyone else is using TREND AND TRANSFORMATION. Two different books haha :/

Zamzam: Yeah, I think I'll just buy Principles of Micro right now in amazon or something. I don't wanna get screwed over first week of school.
