So we're now two weeks before class, and the online UCLA store is still not showing any books for two of my classes. While it would be a wonderful thought to think that these two classes have no books, I'm pretty sure that's illogical to think. So my is, should I head down to the campus (I live decently close) and buy them in person, or will that not make a difference. Basically if the books are not listed on the website, will they be listed in person?

Which classes are they for? If no books are listed then it's probably a course reader that's required. All the classes' books should be listed on the UCLA Store site by now, and they've already been stocked on the shelves since last week (I went and bought them in person).

The books that are missing are for my History 97 (South East Asia Seminar) and for Comm 101 (Freedom of Communication). Neither of those classes are listing any books as of right now on the website.

I don't have any books listed for my cluster, but that's cuz I have a reader. Yep. I only needed to buy one book this quarter. woohoo. haha.

How do you know if a course reader is required? My Intro to Islam class doesn't have anything listed, either.

They would tell you the first day of class I think. I know I have a reader because people who had previously taken that course told me.

thank you, much. :)

So my next question, how much is a reader and how do I go about getting one?

I did have a reader in a Soci class I took last year at my CC, but I got that through the bookstore just like every other textbook.

allena:

Course readers are $8-$12. You can buy them either at the UCLA Store (mostly carries North Campus readers) in Ackerman, or the Course Reader Store (mostly carries South Campus readers) in Westwood next to Rite-Aid.

Thanks for the information!

Course readers vary in prices. Some run as low as flopsy mentioned, while others can run around $60 or upwards even, depending on how many pages and materials that they need publishing permission to reprint. The main store in Westwood is by rite-aid, but if its not there, I know there's at least one more course reader store somewhere in westwood (I don't quite remember exactly where but I think its along the way to fatburger or somewhere around that area).

How come UCLA doesn't carry these readers? I would expect them to be sold in-house if they were put together by the professors.

The reason why the professors' course readers aren't all sold in-house is because UCLA has outsourced their printing to a Westwood printing business, aptly named "Course Reader Material". The printing and binding of the course readers is all done in Westwood, but the purchase lines at the UCLA Store have become so long at the beginning of each quarter that some were diverted to the printing house to pick them up directly. In this way, the lineups have been effectively halved by having half of the readers delivered into Ackerman and half of the readers remaining at the Westwood printers.

So now for my final question on this topic, are we expected to have the readers before class, or will the professor inform us on the first day of class what (and where ) we need to go to get the reader?

You don't need your readers before class- you won't even know that you need a reader until you attend the first day of class when the professor will tell you that you need it and where to purchase it and how much it'll cost you (unless he specifically emails everyone saying otherwise...).

Course Reader Materials is near Kaplan on Westwood Blvd... I think

can we go now ot buy these things?

Hrm, I don't think so, unless you know what course reader to get.

well i mean is the book store even open? and i know what course reader to get.

The bookstore is still open (since summer session c is still going on until the end of this week- not quite sure about next week, but I'm guessing yes?). For the course reader, you can get their phone number and just call ahead to see if they have your course reader made yet or if it exists to begin with- you need to just tell them the subject/class and name of the professor and they'll look it up for you. I'm not sure if this is the one or if its one of the other remote sites (I know there's at least one more besides the main course reader store by rite-aid):
