Buying textbooks early?

Do you recommend buying your textbooks before you get to school? Or should I wait til I get there? My school has like an orientation weekend the weekend before classes start when you can pick up books if you pre-ordered them. Should I do that or buy them now so I can look over them? Or does it even matter? Lol.

wait until you get your schedule

If you already know what books you need and you have time, start looking around on half.com, amazon and chegg to see if they have them cheaper than your bookstore.

Always wait until the first day of class. Sometimes professors will not even require the book or will allow you to get an older edition, which will be way cheaper. It’s hardly ever a good idea to buy books at the school bookstore. They’ll be a lot cheaper online and at used textbook stores. School bookstores change editions a lot so there’s a good chance you’ll buy an expensive book and not be able to sell it back at the end of the semester. However, a good reason to check out a school bookstore is to see if you can rent any of your books.

If you’re really going to need the book on the first day the professor will usually email, or you could always email them to ask about books.

I used to buy early, but sometimes there would be changes / not required books / change classes that I don’t anymore. There really isn’t any reason to.

There is a problem, either you get them early and you KNOW you are gonna find them or you wait and find out if you will actually need it and risk having to pay a lot to get it. Personally I would get them early and just sell it if I don’t need it.

I would get it earlier and cheaper unless you have to fly to your school. In which case, get them sent directly to your dorm address.

It’s better to get them early if you know for sure you need them. Sometimes you can find cheaper prices if you buy them online during a time when there’s less demand. I found a $30 book for about $5 in pristine condition that way.

Do you know your classes yet? At my college, we have orientation and sign up for classes on Thursday, and they start Monday. We don’t have time to order them, and we have to just get them from the bookstore, no matter what the price is. I already ordered music theory textbooks because the School of Music sent out info for what we’d need and said we could order them now.

When I’m sure I’m going to take a class, I like to have the textbook as soon as I can get it. I already bought a few books for Fall quarter. Ideally, I’d be able to get a jump on reading it before class starts, I’m in a major where it is easy to fall behind on the material, and once you fall behind it is darn difficult to catch up.

Yeah I already have my schedule, and it’s pretty much set in stone. I have my book list too.

And if I bought my textbooks early I don’t think I would go to the official college book store, there is a cheaper place a few blocks away lol

I wait until a few days into classes. Sometimes professors change the books you need on the first day of class or say “oh, you don’t really need that” or you may only need one book for one paper or something or for a short amount of time so you can just get it in the library.
