Buying Textbooks

I tried this thread with my college's board but I haven't gotten a response. I wanted a figure for my textbook costs. Though you won't likely know exactly what books I will get you could at least share your experience with buying them. I intend to take four classes (there's one other class I dont expect a required text for) next semester: french, math, and two sciences.

I will have a tight budget next year so my first instinct is to buy the best used deal online. I've heard caution against this that they may not arrive on time. I've also been told not to buy early because you may not get the right edition. How can I best avoid rushes for texts, reduce cost, and get my texts on time.

Thank you for your advice.

I don't know if you'll be able to do this but I buy my textbooks used from the campus bookstore, then order the correct books online. When they come in the mail, I return the ones I got from the bookstore.

I go to the bookstore at the very beginning of the year, look up the books, buy the ones they have used and look up any that they dont (or that are ridiculously priced for used books) online using the ISDN number. All you have to do is type that into Amazon or eBay and then look at the used ones there, that number tells you its the correct edition.
