I'm apply for the BCSA program and I was wondering if there is any way to indicate this in the Common App or Carnegie Mellon supplement. I know you can rank the colleges but is there anywhere on the application that actually allows you to mark an option that you are applying for a BXA program?

The BXAs also have a separate essay that fulfills the 1-page supplement essay so is this the only way the admissions group will know that I'm applying for BCSA?

I'm just worried that I might have overlooked something...

Hey there, current BXA freshman here! Don’t normally post, but this is an issue that comes up for a lot of applicants, myself included.

What you do is, for the CMU’s supplemental essay, write about your interest in the arts and in CS. The admissions committee will interpret this as your intent to major in BXA and will automatically offer you a spot (if you get in), if you write the essay. Don’t worry about checking a special box that says ‘BXA’, just write your essay on art, CS, and how you want to combine them.

There are people currently in the BXA program who never even knew about it, but just ended up writing about their artistic and X interests anyway, and were still offered a spot in the program.

TL;DR, no worries, you’re on the right track.

Thank you so much for the clear answer! I did just that and submitted it. Now I’m just waiting with my fingers crossed!
If I may ask, which program are you doing at BXA?

I’m a BHA student. My ‘A’ is visual art, and my ‘H’ is undecided–thinking maybe linguistics or information systems… and maybe if I can handle it, I may switch to BCSA. It’s all very jumbled up and vague right now, haha, but CMU is totally cool with me futzing around for a while trying to work it out.

I know this is probably too late for a reply. But anyway, I applied to BCSA as well and even though there is no check-box on the CommonApp, there is one on the the portfolio submission form at Slideroom. So don’t worry, they’ll get to know.
And I am hope they see our genuine interest and admit us !
Good luck :)
