By the numbers

Hey guys

I just wanted to run something by you guys. I actually didn't do that hot in terms of my grades in high school and I was wondering if I could still be competitive at HYPS or if I should really set some lower expectations lol. In terms of ECs, I have several stuff on the state and national level and my SATs are fairly strong (Super: 2300, IIs: 780,790,800). Thanks!

(Credit Classes) - There were a lot of changes since I last posted on cc lol.

--
Senior schedule ran out of classes so I'll be dual enrolling at the near community college.

Our school system doesn't rank but cumulatively approximately >4.53 is the top decile. So I definitely rank within the top 10% of a graduating class of ~600 students (?). What worries me is the fact that I have 3 Bs (Freshman), 4 Bs (Sophomore), and 5 Bs (Junior). Granted, there's an increasing courseload, but is this going to be a big problem?

Of course you still have a chance, like most everybody else those schools are reaches and you need some matches and safeties.

What is more interesting is your strategy here of taking what seems like a huge number of courses when you aren’t even getting all As. And I know you can’t go back and redo it, so this is mainly just food for thought. If you had taken fewer classes and gotten all As your UW GPA would be higher, but your W GPA would probably have been the same. You could possibly have strolled out as valedictorian.

However, that depends. It looks like you are mainly having difficulty in the higher level math, and some science classes. It seems like these are hard for a lot of people. Now, if you feel that no matter how much time you spent you wouldn’t be able to get all As in calc then you probably chose the correct strategy. But if you feel like your problem was a lack of time, you probably should have taken fewer classes and concentrated on getting As. Like I said, this is mainly for other people to consider since what’s done is done for you. Sorry for the strategizing here. Good luck.

11 APs in a year? what the hell?

You would have to have some pretty phenomenal national level ECs/awards with so any B’s unless you went to a highly competitive high school (average SAT about 2100).

Well thanks for your advice!

The average SAT at our school is around 1800 so it’s not quite as competitive as you might have specified. But I can assure you that my ECs are of good enough quality haha.

I was aiming for the AP State Scholar Award by my Junior year because one of my ECs demands my full schedule next year as a senior as I’ll be traveling around and attending meetings quite a bit - especially in an election year (I traveled alot up and down the east coast during the 2008 election cycle missing a large part of the start of my junior year and end of my sophomore year) and I worked on a couple campaigns at home making me miss a large part of this semester.

But I’m glad to hear that I still have a chance lol. I was freaking out. I’m pretty bad at math/science, but I still took them just because… I kind of have to. haha Do you think that this is a “downward trend” or that it is pretty balanced these 3 years?
