my community college requires everyone who wants to take a math class to take the assessment test first

the test placed me in statistics (for which the prerequisite is algebra 2/intermediate algebra) even though back in high school i didn't pass 1 semester of algebra 2. do you think i can go ahead and take it or do I still have to retake algebra 2/intermediate algebra to get credit

Good job on being placed into a UC transferable math class! I’d go ahead and take Stats (or any other UC transferable math class you’ve been placed in) just to get the math requirement out of the way.

Elementary/Intermediate/College Algebra is considered a pre-requisite to higher college level math like Finite, Statistics, or Calculus (Business Applications or otherwise). They are non-UC transferrable and therefore will not count towards your UC transfer GPA or be taken into account during the admissions process other than listing them when listing all classes taken at the college level.

The Algebra classes are designed to be stepping stones for higher college mathematics for those who end up having low placement tests. Since you scored well enough to be considered above the algebra level, then as far as the school is concerned, you have meet that requirement and can already enroll in college level math classes, which are the ones you need to transfer. If you feel like you’re not ready or would like remedial math courses (not strong in math or it has been a while since your last math class), then you certainly can enroll in a lower math class to ensure for yourself that you’re adequately prepared to tackle the higher math. Again, anything below the Pre-Calc level will not be UC transferrable and will not affect your UC GPA, but you will need to disclose them on applications as courses that have been taken.

If you feel you may not do well in these pre-requisite math courses, then you can look into your school’s Pass/No Pass grading system to determine if it will be beneficial to take that way (P/NP will just give you a P or NP and not a letter grade therefore not affecting any GPA calculation).

If you take the statistics class now, then you will still receive full credit for passing the class. You are not required to retake the algebra class to make up for the failed semester in the past - UCs won’t care since you’ll be considered a transfer applicant and not a freshman applicant which will put yo in totally different requirements (i.e. college level math course within IGETC).

Great!! Thank you both :)

Just take statistics. It barely uses algebra anyway, and the chapters that do require algebra will explain them first.

I second Shannon. I really dont get the purpose for algebra 2 as a prerequisite for stats at all.
