I got the Byrd Scholarship as well (checked online) but havent received anything in the mail. Im not sure how they make payments for this scholarship but does anyone know if you can use this scholarship for school supplies such as computers?

Are there any PA students who has got the 2005 Byrd Scholarship? Seems only bad news are posted so far.

My friend got it, I said that 5 posts ago, from PA

His stats were 3.4/1190 SAT Score, ranked like 70th in the class, going to UPitt next year <---Its definetely completely random selection in PA, so don't count on your scores to get it. But maybe going to Pitt or another state school plays a role in it? After all, it is for Pennsylvania.

My D's stats = 4.0u/4.2w/1440 SAT/#1 of 430 = No Byrd Scholarship in PA.

She is also going to a state school (PSU), so that didn't seem to factor in at all.

Geez..still haven't heard anything. Oh well at least by not knowing we still have hope!! The thing with the Byrd Scholarship is that D would actually be able to use most of it for tuition (though not all).. her school replaces subsidized loans only and then grants with outside scholarships and all she got was 1150 in subsidized loans..The rest is all being paid for by..US!! Retirement may come by the time I am 80. Good luck to all of you who haven't heard anything yet.

Well, just got the mail.. D didn't get the scholarship either.. big surprise.

has anyone heard anything about Georgia?

I didn't get a scholarship from PA, either.
1500 SAT, 4.0UW, 4.85W :(
Going to University of Pennsylvania

another one of my friends got it
1210 SATs, 3.8, going to East Stroudbsurg I think? (some college in Eastern PA)

lol. If it wasn't random I would be a little upset

should everyone have heard by now?

ecnerwalc3321,
From my previous post one page back:

"CC thread from last year showed people in some states did not receive notification until August. The best thing you can do is stay in touch with the state office."

I received notification of receiving the Byrd scholarship in April. For Nebraska, you have to have a 30 or higher ACT to apply. Then, one person from each of the twelve educational district is chosen, and then more are split up evenly to the three government districts. For my state, the scholarship is based solely on ACT scores, GPA, and class rank. My highest sub-scores for the ACT were: 35 Math, 35 English, 34 Reading, 36 Science, and my highest composite was a 34. My GPA was 4.0/4.0, and I was first in my class of 30 students. I am attending Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota this fall because it has a competitive Division II volleyball team I will compete for and is a small, good liberal arts college that is close to home.

Oh, then PA seems to like to reward students with 1200ish SAT's and as far as possible down the line for class rank.

I also didn't win this PHEEA Byrd scolarship (1470 SAT, 5/460 in the class, 5.0 QPA)
And I'm not eligible for the Academic Excellence Scolarship b/c I didn't receive any state grants (btw someone said he/she will try to appeal this, how will you do it? by sending them a letter?)

At least we can ask how PHEEA does the random selection, it seems to me that only lower ranked students get the scholarship. It is not fair to those real top students who has 4 GPA, 1500 SAT and 1-2% of the class.

One of the posters mentioned that they looked it up on the web. What is the website. I got to this website trying to see whether there was a list of all winners on the web.

Thanks

i'm from texas and havent heard anything. does that mean i didnt get it?

To gastudent123 re Georgia:

We called the Dept. of Education (who chooses) and the Georgia State Finance Commission (who administers). We were told announcements would be made in June (by GSFC) and in August (by DOE). It could be that the choice is made in June (following all grade reports) and the money is distributed in August; alternately, it could be that the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing! We also did a pretty comprehensive search of the DOE website looking for past announcements of recipients and didn't find anything that would give us a date. In any case, hang tight. It apparently hasn't happened yet.

Has anyone in CA received a letter or any "official" notification yet? The website for CA says they should have been mailed out but I haven't received mine.

Received official notification in Indiana, "no". Oh well, son didn't even recall applying for this one! Just to let you know the paperwork in Indiana is out and in the mail.

I received a call today from the Florida office for Byrd. They asked me what college I would be attending and then told me I would hear if I got it or not mid-July.
