I failed precalculus- I got a D and need to make it up in time for college apps.im a junior btw. I also got a low us history grade- I got a C (long story but I basically missed a test and wasn't allowed to make it up) I also need to make it up.I talked to my counselor and she said I could make it up online. Will colleges look at me as inferior to other students who took it in school? Will byu independent study appear on my transcript? does this mean I can make up any class for which I don't like the grade in?(potentially getting an extremely high gpa) Lastly, if i take german online- its not offered at school but itll still go on my transcript right?please, anything helps!I'm really worried because I'm not doing so well in math this semester either and I am trying to do it online too

Whether classes appear on your transcript or not depends on whether your school gives you credit for them. Pretty much all of your questions depend on your school and you should ask your counsellor.

You shouldn’t automatically assume that “online” means “easier”. Don’t take on more than you can handle because if this classes will take place during the school year you’ll have all of those classes AS WELL AS your normal classes. When are you planning to take these online classes?

Thanks for the help!I’m planning on taking the 1st semester of math ASAP- possibly during school time- since it’s all pretty much review and I know the basics of the material.Byu gives 1year to complete the course so I have time.Im hoping to do the rest of the classes during the first couple of weeks of summer.

I dont think it’ll be easier but rather better set up.They offer free tutoring and if you fail the final once, you get to take it once more. It’s certainly a great opportunity!

I’m a little confused about how online classes work in conjunction with a “brick and mortar” school because I take online classes whilst homeschooled so take this with a pinch of salt. :)

When this online math class goes on your transcript, will your old grade still show?
Will the transcript state that this was an online class?

I’m also curious as to whether you will continue with your school math class as well as this online class? If you could, you could use those periods to work on your online class.

I will continue taking the class I am taking now eventhough I will fail.It will help me learn and get ready for the online class-so it’ll be easier. Its too late to drop the class now so no, I cannot work on it during those hours.

Yes the previous grade shows up but the higher grade gets calculated in the gpa.

In that case, I would say that the issue isn’t with how the online class looks to college but how the original low grade will look. Get a tutor and use Khan Academy and try to drag your grade up as much as you can for the rest of the year. You can make a huge difference in the time you have left. I was getting an F for most of the last semester in AP Chem and ended up with a B+.

It’ll be difficult for you. Of course it will. But if you didn’t try and failed the class at the end of the year, you’ll end up wondering how much it impacted your college decisions. It’s better to try and fail than not try at all and all of that… ;)

What Lisa said.

That’s what I meant. That was my initial question. How would it look if I made it up to colleges-perhaps I didn’t make it so clear but now that you know what I mean, would I be seen as inferior to those who took it in school and passed it?

Obviously it would look better to get it the first time. I’m still a bit confused about the adviser’s comment to make it up online. Did she give any suggestions about the best place to do that? Did the adviser or the teachers have any suggestions for helping your normal grade?

Good luck!
