I don't know of a high school in America that has a combat arms team so how do they know if your good at dynamic shooting or not. Do you ask for a chance to be on the team or do they contact you depending on how well you do when qualifying with the rifle and pistol. And when do you "try out" during the year. The same question goes for the sailing teams.

USNA has a great sports website: http://navysports.cstv.com/

Look in the left margin for sports you're interested in. Intercollegiate sailing at USNA is hard core; they have one of the best teams in the nation (womens' and coed) and they recruit junior sailors. VOST (varsity offshore sailing team) is about ocean racing on big boats and working toward a D-qual. Great questions! Good Luck!

Well, WAY back in the day you tried out for the pistol team by going down to the pistol range under Bancroft and trying out. No idea how they do it now or if the range under Mother B even exists anymore.

As for when do you try out, all such clubs and sports make announcements prior to tryouts, either from the Anchor before meals (or whatever they are using these days while King Hall is gutted) or in the POD. If you have an interest, you can also contact the club/sport president/coach directly and ask. With the advent of e-mail and such, I imagine it's fairly simple to do.

Sure would be a hoot if they had an IDPA chapter, that's for sure! :D

They just had tryouts and it consisted of a PFT, shooting, and an interview.

APan, does the club do actual dynamic shooting or just benchwork?

If it's the latter, I'll be extremely jealous. There was no such thing in my day. :(

USNA09mom, do you have a kid on VOST? That's what my son would like to do if he's appointed. He has a level 2 cert from the RYA. And he's sailed (but not competitively) on mid size and reaally big boats. I'd appreciate your 2 cents on VOST. Is it difficult to grab a spot for a plebe?

^^^^^
Each boat has an 8 member crew. There are plenty of opportunities for plebes.

My friend does VOST...I think they have JV boats too. He likes it, for summer training he gets to race to Bermuda.

Zaph I dont know too much about how they shoot, I just read the emails because I was thinking about maybe trying it. They run around obstacles and change magazines and firearms and shoot different targets and thats the extent of my knowledge lol.

CAT does a lot of dynamic shooting. Main weapons are the Sig Sauer P228, MP-5, M4, and a Benelli tactical 12 G shotgun.

Tryouts were fun, but I didn't make it. The shooting part consisted of 10 rounds slow fire, then a segment where you did 40 pushups, ran to a target, popped a mag of 10 in the P228, and knocked down 5 targets. I did it in 6 shots, which was a lot better than most. It's probably easier to get SEAL than to make the CAT.

<--- Slamming his head against his desk at work.

MP-5's! They have MP-5's!

<--- Now crying hysterically at work. :(

Fortunately, I have an M4gery and a Benelli M2 Tactical that I can play with these days, so there is some consolation. ;)

Man, that is awesome. They should turn that into a club and maybe even make it mandatory.

Haha...funny you should mention that, because they lost their club status last year.

Members have to pay a larger-than-nominal dues to cover the ammunition that they no longer receive funds for.

As for making it mandatory, only 16 mids are on the team. They limit it to four per class, hence the intense competition at tryouts.

Here's one for you Z...Plebes now have to draw from a holster as part of the quals for pistol. My son was on Weapons Detail last summer and had a great time. The stories he tells.......

I bet!

I did Pistol Detail my 2/C Summer, and almost had my belly evacuated by one young Pleber who lost his situational awareness after a hangfire. He turned, absentmindedly pointing the weapon at my stomach and said, "Sir, my gun won't work."

 <--- Me.

Only 16 on the team, eh? Bummer. It always seems the best clubs are always underfunded. When I was there it was the Flying Club (I wish I could remember the squadron letters) and the SCUBA Club. You would think that at the United States NAVAL Academy, not only would the SCUBA Club be funded, but that SCUBA certification would be mandatory!

Oh, well. I'm not the Sup. :(

There was some uproar from various clubs at the beginning of last fall. It seems they pulled a lot of funding for the career-oriented clubs (Semper Fi, CAT, SCUBA, etc), and put it all towards D&B, cheerleading and those other non-career oriented organizations.

At this rate, YP Squadron will be the only one left standing.

Good grief.

As for the pistol range under 2nd Wing, it still exists. I'm an active member on the club. We actually just went to MIT for a match.

It's lookin' like I'm gonna be spending my spring break at that lesser military institution in NY for the national pistol match. :-/

Well, make sure you have your shots up to date. No knowing what those guys are carrying. ;)

And to think, I now live and work less than an hour from there. Time for ME to check up on MY shots!

So the range is still there, eh? Cool. I could not for the life of me remember which wing it was under, as I only went there once to try out (and blew it).

Hello, dmeix! Nice to hear from you. Pistol club sounds like huge fun. What can you tell us about the prospective SEAL club?

I've really been sticking to the other forum. For some reason, this site wasn't accessible on the network until I just tried it today.

There's one other guy in my company who wants SEAL. He's a prior HM3...spent 2 or 3 years in Okinawa. We try to find ways to earn "Man Points"...which usually involves doing something absurdly painful/stupid. For example, the next time we get a lot of ice and the temperature is ridiculously low, we're going to dive into the Severn.

SEAL PT is run by the SEAL LT on the yard. Workouts vary from runs to swims to calisthenics in MacD. It's a good time. I consider myself pretty fit, but some of those guys are beasts.

Maybe it's because I've got a Major for a company officer, but I've been considering Marine Ground as a backup for SEAL. Anything to avoid SWO (no offense, Z).

Yes, Marine Recon is pretty cool. I know you have great instincts for it. You reconned the yard pretty thoroughly before the candidate visit last April!

It must be a lot of pressure working out with the Seal LT. I imagine he has a lot of input come service selection time or at least for who gets mini-BUDS.
