I'm a rising senior and I just learned of my grades for this past semester (second semester Junior year) today. I got a C in AP Chemistry (only 8 points) away from a B.

I am a mostly A student with excellent extracurriculars.

How badly will this affect my college prospects?

Do you see that your question is pointless? Get your freaking out under control, you should know you did something this semester to receive the low grade.

Did you talk to your teacher about those 8 points and if there was any possible solution?
The C won’t look great, but if you’re a consistent A student then I think you will be okay. I don’t think any college would reject a stellar applicant because of one grade

Someone didn’t read the link. I was quoting (I see you may be new here, but posts in boxes that say quote are, in fact, quotes, not original replies) from a post re: a sophomore, but the exact same applies to you.

You’re not asking for insight, you’re asking people to tell you what you already know: a C looks bad.

No one here has the admissions experience to tell you how bad, and even if we did, we don’t know what the rest of your application looks like, what schools you’re even talking about, or what in the world you mean by “excellent extracurriculars”.

EDIT: even “good private schools/UCs” is extremely vague. I’ll assume you mean something like USC and LA/Irvine/Davis, in which case, we still don’t have test scores, what your course load actually looks like, or how rigorous your course selection has been in previous years.

My extracurriculars include: multiple leadership positions (President of two clubs–including National Honor society, position on a national youth leadership board, oil painting–for which I’ve received awards, President of School Site Council, etc.).

I am just asking for general advice, not a specific diagnosis.

If it is general advice you want (from above):

You know what general advice to get into college looks like, and that is certainly not why you are here.

I’d imagine, if you have a 2100ish SAT, that you’re in at Davis and Irvine. UCLA and USC would probably be reaches, but there are plenty of matches to which you should expect to me admitted. Do you want to stay in Cali, or are nationwide private schools alright?

One C will certainly not kill you, but please give sufficient information to help.

EDIT: Never mind. Write excellent essays and you’re probably in anywhere but Berkeley, and I suspect Berkeley would be a low reach.

(take everything with a grain of salt, I’m a rising senior too :D)

I don’t know what grading scale you have, but 8 points is quite a difference from a B. Of course, as long as your GPA hovers around 4.0 uw overall, it won’t matter. GPA is obviously important, so you can’t expect a C to just go away when colleges review your application though. Everything is about chance and every little bit helps. If everything else is great, your chances should still be good.
