C-? How accurate is CP's rating?

Hey guys,

I am going to be a member of Carleton's class of 2014 and I am really excited about that. I've been reading through CP's (I'm avoiding spelling their name because CC for some reason, censors them out) review and they gave Carleton's girls a rating of "C-" as well as guys.

This is what the paragraph said:

"The biggest stigma about Carleton is the non-attractive students, but this is not completely true. The biggest issue with physical appearance is the lack of time and care most Carls put into it. However, the longer you’re at Carleton, the hotter the campus becomes. Whether these are the “Carleton goggles” or your parameters for attraction have simply readjusted, by the time you leave you’ll have a new understanding of what it means to "have a personality." The campus isn’t overly promiscuous, but that’s not to say it’s full of prudes either. Everyone has different views on sex, but students here generally worry more about their studies than trying to get some action.

Carleton’s main focus is academics, not preening. You won’t find girls walking around in mini-skirts, halter-tops, and six-inch heels. Girls can’t spend hours in front of the mirror doing makeup and still keep up with their coursework. This isn’t to say that all Carls are ugly—there are some very good-looking people—but the average Carl is average-looking. Admittedly, it doesn’t do much to encourage good looks. If you think personality and moustaches are sexy, then Carleton is the place for you. But if you like mini-skirts or muscle-bound jocks, you might be better off elsewhere."

This isn't an issue to me, I'm merely curious as to how accurate this is as I find these sort of ratings very much subjective...

What do you guys think?

Of course it’s subjective; they’re assigning grades for the appearance of an entire student body.

I appreciate the qualifiers, but personally, I don’t think Carls are any more or less attractive than students from the LACs of the same caliber that I visited before coming here. It’s hardly news to hear that students at top tier schools are supposedly uglier than students at, say, Arizona State (no offense to Arizona intended), but having never visited one of the big southern schools with “A” ratings I can’t really comment on the accuracy of the comparison.

There are plenty of fashionable girls at Carleton (I’ve said it before, but they tend to come from the two coasts) who wear dresses and cute shoes to class. And maybe it depends on your “type”, but I’ve never had cause to complain for lack of male eye candy. :D

Hmmm. I think you can probably tell by just reading it that it is a sweeping generalization. That said, Carleton is all about academics and fun. Spending hours putting on makeup and walking around campus in 6 inch heels is neither smart nor fun, unless there’s a special event to go to.

Just my opinion. :)

I read that and was actually wondering about it myself. Could this possibly be what started the rumor that “Carleton girls don’t wear makeup”? I saw it in another thread and I was genuinely curious, as another woman had also mentioned it to me. Not that I really care, because God knows that I don’t really wear much make-up myself, but I’d always wondered where that came from.

^Same. For what it’s worth, I go to Carleton and I usually wear a bit of makeup. I know plenty of girls like my roommate who only wear it to formal events as well as plenty of girls who wear more (like black eyeliner and mascara) every day to class.

Sounds like I’ll fit in just fine, then. Thanks!

Of course, you could always cross the Cannon River to meet St. Olaf women. CP rates them as A+ :)

St. Olaf is a dry campus.
Carleton is not.

The migration weekend nights usually takes place the opposite way. ;)
