Alright guys, I am applying to half the Ivy League schools and Stanford, everything looks good, I am a qualified applicant, etc etc. But, I dread having the Mid-Year Report filled out. I should have an A in every class other than Calculus. There I am sinking with a C.

The only explanation is I switched in late and haven't caught up since...is this absolutely gonna murderize me?

lol. Uhhh, i am not qualified to answer that question, but:

Is it AP?

If so, it probably won't be that bad, that is, if you really are well qualified. you shouldn't have a problem because they see that you've done well in everything else. THE ONLY THING is they may deferr your application to see how well you do 3rd and 4th quarters. I don't think they'll deny you right away...then again, we're talking about IVY's here, they can be really anal about everything...those pieces of ****s don't know how hard it is to be a student. Anyway, enough of my ramblings!

I have an A- in AP calc (sorry, I couldn't resist :D haha). Anyway...uhh it probably would help, but again, Ivy schools are really strict, and not as understanding as other schools. Don't get me wrong, you'll probably be accepted, but normal colleges would look at it and have sympathy as they'll realize that it's difficult and if you take that one grade aside, you're doing great. Ivy schools tend to think otherwise. I would definitely talk to your guidance counselor, though, it can only help for the colleges to know why you got a C. Think of it as being late to class w/o an excuse...you get screwed over. I believe the situation would be similar here. The worst that can happen is you don't get accepted. No big deal--their loss, there are plenty of other colleges out there.

Then again, the colleges could refute and say "well, why weren't you going after school to catch up?" I forgot about that minor detail since my HS is currently having teacher contract issues, so no extra help at all. If your first semester has not closed yet, I suggest staying after to catch up on what you missed.

If your prospective major is Mathematics, it will hurt you pretty bad. Perhaps a glowing recommendation from your AP teacher would help. (98 BC)

Hmm, I can tell hp's prospective major is not english! "hurt you pretty bad" instead of "badly." Hahaha, just giving you [hp] a hard time!! Mine's not english either, but whatever.

Well, look at it this way---your C is there, you can't change it, so just do as well as you can during the next few quarters.

Listen David, I wouldn't worry too much about that C. I'd just accept the fact and begin my appliance to Texas Tech. It's a good school, and they'll understand a C. I'm assuming your C is mirrored on your Math SAT score, so I'm sure you'll be a welcome addition to the Red Raiders. Also, go ahead and apply to some huge reach, like Washington & Lee. You have alright stats to make it, but I'm predicting a no. But hey? What do I know?

Good Luck
Velocity
Harvard Graduate

(P.S. I hate to say it, but it looks like that C is going to "murderize" you)

Oh, David, I'm sorry, I over looked your grade scale. If you had an 86 C, most schools would count that as a B plus. I could definatly see you getting into Washington & Lee, and maybe Duke. College's wouldn't care about you switching late, because they would see it as your choice, and that you didn't know you weren't ready. Standford is still a reach, but it's plausable

velocity, what is the point of you running around this board making up stuff? amherst, nyu, harvard grad who wants to know his chances at duke because his parents thinks his 1580/4.0 is low? how about you create a new account, pick a lie, and stick to it. or better yet.....JUST LEAVE

Don't worry about it. I read an article about Brown admissions and how they admitted a girl with a C in AP Calc because her essay rocked. Don't listen to these people, we don't have a damn clue what we're talking about, I don't care how many adcoms so-and-so has talked to or "knows". Just go for it. I'm applying to similar schools and I totally failed one of my AP exams, but I'm not worrying about it, especially since it has nothing to do with my major (English) and I'm pretty well lopsided.

...and because apparently I feel like it because these things bother me and Kosuke seems to have something out for velocity, who seems to have an enormous ego (are we compensating for something here?):

I think it's awfully pretentious to brand yourself a Harvard graduate when you make words possessive instead of plural and misspell definitely, Stanford, and plausible.
