C in Major Prep Class

Seriously, just tell me how screwed I am....

I thought I had a B for sure but obviously not...
WHAT AM I GOING TO DO...

UGHHH>.<

What’s your major, what was the class you got this grade in, and where would you like to transfer?

Cayton, I feel literally so stupid for even saying this now… but here goes. Hopefully I don’t get judged for this but oh well…
Okay I am an English Major, I applied to UCLA as an American Literature and Culture Major though.
I also applied to UCB, UCSD, UC I, and UC Davis (where I got an approved TAG Decision).
When I applied (including my summer grades) I had a 3.5 gpa. But unfortunately I got my first C in this British Literature Class… And that’s not even the worst of this semester. I failed my Math 070 class for the 3rd time(please don’t ask), meaning I have to retake it AGAIN at another CC… I don’t know what I’m going to do. I have been working so hard and it seems as if now all hope is lost. How can they accept me seeing that my winter grades will not be updated in time… I’m so screwed. I know I can get an A in the math class (it is not transferrable by the way) but still… ugh please help ):

Sorry for the long post.

Well, for UCLA, gradewise, you’re probably not screwed: average admitted gpa in your major was 3.46 last year. Don’t know about the other UCs.

The math will be more of a problem, though. I’m not really sure what you can do right now. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you probably won’t be able to complete your transferable math class by the end of spring.

Well I applied to another community college for the winter and I am taking the placement test tomorrow. There is still room in the class I need… So that helps right?

Maybe if your winter class ends before the TAU deadline.

Does anyone know what happens if you know what grade you’re going to get for sure and then post it in the update even if they aren’t posted…

^Don’t do that. What if the grade is not correct after you send your final transcript. It’s a risk.

cries* the cutoff is two days after the TAU deadline

Hmm, in that case, if you can pass that class and pass the transferable math class by end of spring, you may have a chance. Good luck!

If you failed your math class 3 times already and are putting it as in progress on your update do you really believe the adcon will think you will pass the class?

@bomerr

To be fair, bomerr, only UCSB is known to actually deny applicants because they didn’t pass their last math class by fall or look like they may not pass their last math class in winter/spring.

No other UC(As far as I know. Correct me here if I’m wrong) actually denies applicants because their last math class will be taken in spring and because they appear not to be good at math. Offers of admission are conditional anyway. They’ll just accept otherwise qualified applicants and notify them that they’ll rescind the offer of admission of they fail that math class.

OP are you still pre-med? If so, the thing that scares me is the fact that those 3 F’s will be factored into your cumulative GPA. If you are still planning on going this route, I would highly advise you to reconsider what you’re doing.

Snorlaz, luckily for me I did Pass/No Pass plus this is not a transferrable math course. So it does not count in my UC GPA. But yes, I agree I have some things to reconsider if I want to even be close to being competitive in that field.

Another note, it’s not the actual subject I found difficult but managing my time effectively/procrastination which yes, I understand I will have to get over immediately.

NP counts as an F in the eyes of GS’s. Although it isn’t transferable to the UC’s, when you apply to GS, they are going to want to see all of your grades from every college class ever taken until you get your BA. Meaning if you take MathX 4 times and get 3 F’s and 1 A, they will factor in all four grades, not the last one like the UC’s.

Do you really want to major in English? Would you be happy pursuing a career in the field in case you don’t go to med school?

But after that if they see I pass my Statistics class and Pre-Calc and then Calc will they hold that against me? And honestly I can’t see myself pursuing anything but medicine. I mean if ALL FAILED and I was forced to stay with English, I would manage but I would not be happy. I was also considering postbaccalaureate programs after I get my BA.

And lastly, I am pretty sure it doesn’t matter but when applying to UC’s now, you can take classes at multiple CC’s with no problem, correct? I am missing one pre-req for my major prep and they offer an online class at another CC in the spring… I am considering taking it in order to finish all of them before I transfer… even though all of my friends got accepted without that class. If I do that, I will have classes from three different CC’s…is that okay? It is, right?

Aren’t you getting a little bit ahead of yourself. Math 70 is intermediate algebra? If you failed it 3 times I don’t see how will you pass calculus. Your still got geometry & trig to learn, along with all the other math stuff (e.g. log or e)

Plus Calc 1 has been the hardest class I have ever taken.

@flowerchild I strongly recommend you getting help with math 70. There is no reason to fail a remedial math class three times. Medical school admissions are cut throat. I personally think the UC’s give people too much slack with the amount of W’s they’re allowed as well as forgiveness for sub-standard grades. I agree with the other posters I think you should rethink your options.
