<p>Hey,</p>

<p>I'm an international applicant from india applying for undergraduate engineering in the States.</p>

<p>Financial - No Aid</p>

<p>so my details go like this:-</p>

<p>SAT - 2030
CR - 590
Math - 730
Writing - 710</p>

<p>Appeared for SAT in Physics and Maths IIC (Expecting around 700 in both)</p>

<p>Class Rank - 2nd out of 57 students</p>

<p>Teacher reccomendations - Very strong!</p>

<p>Job Experiences-</p>

<p>1) Interned at an automotive workshop as an assistant service mechanic for 2 months in the summer of 2008. Paid.</p>

<p>2) Interned at an industrial component manufacturer where i complied huge databases of AutoCAD drawings of their components in summer 2009. Paid.</p>

<p>3) Currently an unpaid apprentice at the Jaguar Land Rover dealership, in their workshop.</p>

<p>Extracurriculars- </p>

<p>1) Captain of the School Golf team (founded the team too)</p>

<p>2) Participated and ranked in the to few in state and national level golf tournaments</p>

<p>3) One of the 12 selected from India to participate in the St. Andrews Golf summer school in Scotland</p>

<p>4) President of 500 member international religious organization.</p>

<p>Community Service- </p>

<p>1) 2 month service at a national organization, going into slums and convincing parents to send their kids to school and give them an education (we also got the education sponsored)</p>

<p>2) 2 hrs/week & 52 weeks/year community service at a place of worship where serve food to devotees and cook food in their community kitchen. </p>

<p>Essays - Very Strong (Worked pretty hard for the past 3 months on them and everyone whose read them, loved them)</p>

-very good class rank, what kind of school did you attend?
-you have pretty good extracurriculars as well, but probably short of top notch</p>

<p>You’re not applying for aid? So I assume that means you’ll pay full tuition then. If that’s the case, I’d say that Columbia would be a moderate to strong reach school for you.</p>

<p>What would you say for cornell?</p>

<p>I don’t want to be harsh but Columbia rejects a lot of people who want to go. I would say you have a 30% chance of getting acceteped.
I am only saying this cuz I got rejected from ED and I thought I was qualified too

<p>Not sure if being an international applicant will help, but if you’re applying engineering @ columbia, your CR score is a little low :frowning: so i’d say a high reach for you. like the person above me, i would say that cornell would have higher guarantee of admission. </p>

<p>Columbia might be a bit tough, but if your essays and recommendations are great, then you have a good chance since they like internationals. But if you could raise your SAT I and SAT II scores, then you’d have a much better chance.</p>

<p>You’ll probably get into Cornell, though.</p>

<p>Yeah, Columbia would be a mid-reach school for you, I know it’s been mentioned in this thread a few times already but look into Cornell for Engineering, they have a pretty good program…</p>

<p>As others have mentioned, Columbia is a reach, and you might have an easier time at Cornell. Have you tried getting in touch with the golf coaches from either school?</p>

<p>Columbia and Cornell would be reaches for you in my opinion.</p>

<p>According to Cornell’s Common Data Set, only 12% of students got accepted that had between a 500-599 on the CR portion of the SAT. I’m not sure if being an international student will help you or not; the competition from India is very strong, so I dont know if that will hurt you. </p>

<p>If you didn’t apply for aid I’d say you do have a chance but Columbia is very very hard to get into I think. (I got rejected ED but I’m not that good and I also applied for financial aid. Columbia was just my first choice…)
If you still have time and raise your CR you might get in but you never know for what reasons they take someone or reject someone. Ivies want internationals but they don’t want to give them money. That’s how I feel about it :]</p>

<p>Yes, not applying for aid helps, but it’s not actually a hook for acceptance. If your test scores aren’t high enough you’ll still be rejected. However, seeing as the OP is an international applicant, Columbia might give him a bit of leeway on his CR score. Nevertheless, he is from India, an extremely competitive region so I’d think that they’d still expect a bit more than just a 590.</p>
