C on transcript

I'm a junior right now and I'm most likely going to end AP Calculus BC this semester with a C+ ( I had a B+ last semester). This course is one of the most challenging ones my school offers, and I've been taking almost all the APs and honors my school offers so far. My unweighted GPA as of last semester is a 3.86 and my weighted is a 4.44. I also scored a 2350 on the SAT, and 2390 superscore, and I have some extracurriculars. Will the C hurt my chances of getting into a university? (I'm aiming for UC Berkeley, UCLA, or some of the lower Ivys) I'm also an Asian female which probably doesn't help :/

Why are you people thinking race and gender matters? It’s the 21st century, race and gender inequality is non-existent in universities. Your GPA is good and so is your SAT. Your ECs however don’t seem outstanding, otherwise you would have mentioned it. A C+ will harm your transcript, especially if you are going to a math/science department. It’s good that you have taken difficult courses though. Try to get a 5 on the AP Exam for Calculus BC. That would make up for it. Otherwise, you have a good chance at the UCs. Good luck!

do you really think getting a 5 on the AP test would make up for it? and my list of ECs is short but I invest a lot of time in all of them (speech and debate, newspaper, yearbook, Girl Scouts)

Having few ECs will harm you, most definitely. However, if you have invested a lot of time in them, then mention that you did which was why you couldn’t participate in other activities. An AP exam is a standardized test based on the official curriculum of the corresponding AP course. If you do get a 5 on the AP Exam, it shows that you have more or less full understanding of what’s in the syllabus. It won’t completely make up for it, since your GPA will be lower and universities will wonder why you did badly in the class and not the exam (if you have a valid reason for under-performing, then make sure that you mention it). Nonetheless, it will make more universities overlook your fairly bad mark in the AP Calculus BC course.

Caveat: If you did badly in a class, you will need to study significantly to do well on the AP exam. I suggest you ask your teacher and/or classmates for notes, videos etc and read your textbook thoroughly and do most of the problems. You can also do problems and get helpful information from <a href=“AP Calculus BC Exam – AP Students | College Board”>Get the Most Out of AP – AP Students | College Board;
(highly recommended).

You can check with your GC but I believe transcripts only show final grades. One ‘B’ won’t make or break your application. If your AP exam is a 5 and your Math II Sat score is an 800 then it should be okay. Good luck!

What do you mean “final grades?” This is his/her final grade as it is the last semester.
