Would you rather get a C in a class or a get a F and retake the class for a higher grade?

It would depend on whether it was for a high school transcript or college for a major requirement. If HS, are you allowed to repeat a class if you get a 'C'? Or do you have an option to take the same class at a nearby community college? Did your earn a B the first semester, and now can see the handwriting on the wall for second semester?

The thing is even if you get an A in the course the F will still be on your transcript but the A is what they used to calculate your gpa. So I am guessing this would be a major negative if applying to grad school or something.

Our school (college) takes the average of the two grades to calculate the GPA, and both grades remain on the transcript. I know a lot of schools don't wipe the slate clean and remove the "F" from the transcript...

I think the C would be better than an F on the transcript, even if you can retake it.

Actually, if I were getting a grade that was very bad, I'd withdraw, go with the "W" on the transcript, and retake it (rather than going with the F and retaking).

My school takes the newer grade for the GPA but they don't wipe the F from transcript..I dont think I can drop the class now. Do you think I should just be satisfied with a C. Is failing a class, the end of your graduate school dreams?

dude, it's just a C. in ONE class none the less.

Grow up. (No offense, but that's my opinion on the matter.)

You guys amuse me to no end..

Also, it's February. The semester isn't even half over yet. Isn't it a little early to assume that if you don't purposely throw the class, you're going to get a C?

if you get a flat C, your gpa will be 2.0 for those units. If you get an F (0.00 gpa for the units) and then get an A, which you may or may not get, your overall gpa for those units will still be a 2.0.

bottom line, get the C.

Why is this relevant, if you get a B in the class you can retake it if you want to. But, if you get a lower grade, it will still go on your transcript.

bruinboy that's not necessarily true. At UCB if you get an F you can retake the same units (basically you're taking 0 new units) and it'll replace your F. You only get something like 12 'retake units' though. But I'd much prefer an F since I'd get the chance to change it to an A. Plus, at most jobs they don't look through your whole transcript, just your overall GPA.

^that's true, im just suggesting that the OP make sure that his/her school's policy is parallel to what you just described.

this is ridiculous.

I know a lot of people who work very hard in classes and sometimes end up with a C. A couple C's will not kill your college transcript. Wow.
