c1utch's chances

second post, hello everyone. I'd like to just say i'm not as high academically as most here, but I try!

Okay:

Male, White, 17 in June.
ACT: 31 (retaking because of science in october)
english 32
math 31
reading 36
science 24
aiming for a 33 or so composite.

SAT: 1980 (retaking because I forgot and didnt study :-/)
aiming for a 2100-200

SATII - Taking US History, Physics, and Math Lvl 2 in a few days ...

GPA Weighted: 4.5 unweighted 3.6
(my school is seriously pretty much the hardest grading-wise in my area of colorado, but I'm worried they will not know because I'll be the 2nd graduating class?)

I've taken 5 AP classes and will take 4 more next year. (gov, human geo, us hist, spanish, physics, comp sci ab, calc bc, ap lit, ap lang) 9 total.

Honestly, I havn't done much in the way of EC, I've only had summer jobs, and my school isn't much for clubs (again new school). I'm the Director General of the Petanque club, and Web Director and author for the school website. Oh, I'm also pretty close to my Eagle, but I'm not sure if i'll finish in the next 6 months. Also, i've been to regionals for science fair twice, and will make it to state/int'l next year (heres hoping)

Also I plan to join NHS at the beginning of next year, I simply forgot to apply this year. (first year it was offered)

Reccomendation letters from a MIT grad (undergrad and phd there), my sicence teacher for 2 years, and a Cornell grad (undergrad and phd) my Advisor. Also I have refrences as a friend of my family is a professor at MIT Sloan. Dunno if that helps me any though.

I think thats about it, I know not great but what are my chances at some of these colleges:

MIT (may as well apply right?)
Carnagie Mellon
UC Berkley
Harvey Mudd
Cornell Uni
Boston University
Rice
Colorado School of Mines
CU Boulder (pretty much my "safety")

honestly, I like the sound of C Mellon the best, but yea MIT would be great, if I could get in.

edit
Oh, and my school won't officially send out class rank, but I'll be about 10-15/80 I suppose. Considering the average ACT score for my school is around a 30, that isn't bad.

bump bump bump

Excellent chances at CU Boulder, Mines
Good chances at BU, CMU Humanities+Social Sciences
Medium chances at CMU Sciences
Low chances (but possibilities) at CMU Engineering/CS, Berkeley, Harvey Mudd, Cornell, Rice <---(these would be medium chances if you had a higher SAT/ACT)
Very low chances at MIT, but maybe the recommendations will help out.

By the way, it's possible to matriculate at CMU in the H&SS school and still graduate with a major in the sciences/engineering/cs.

What you have to do is take the courses you're required to take in H&SS (choose any major in social sciences and humanities), while taking all the courses you need for the other engineering/cs/science degree on the side. The workload will be INSANE, but it's possible and some people do it.

Full-fledged transfers into other departments are also possible but it's a gamble.

so say I got a 2100 - 2200 and a 33 or so, would that boost anthing? I'm planning on reataking and those are right around my practice test scores.

The recommendations, even if it was from those people, wouldn't be worth much unless it was a very deep and appreciative recommendation. It's not at all WHO writes it that matters, but WHAT the recommendations says.

I would also agree that MIT would be an extremely far reach, similar to Berkeley, and Cornell. CU and Mines, I would say you have excellent chances to.

I think the most important thing at the top engineering schools (MIT, Cal, HM, Cornell) is that you get a VERY high math score on the SAT I and II, and high science scores on the II. So a 2100 would probably be fine if the math was very close to 800.

Colorado School of Mines...? what's that?

A mining/engineering focused school over here in colorado. Private, and a little more selective than colorado public universities

http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/profiles/generalinfo.asp?listing=1023752&LTID=1

that is the princeton review page, its considered a "Best in the West" school, I guess. Seemed a bit run down when I visited before, but overall pretty decent.

School of Mines? Interesting name....anyway, chances for MIT are a little weak it seems. YOu have a good ACT score and I think you will eventually get science higher anyway. i think you have a good chance at CMU, but the others are really hard to tell. If you incerease your scores, the chances will goo way up.
