CA Community College as a safety

I have heard some folks went from the local CC to Berkeley by maintaining a certain GPA. I was wondering about making this a backup strategy. That is - suppose that April came around and I'm shot down at all my schools. :-( Could I then apply at that time to the local community college (San Mateo, Foothill, DeAnza whatever) for a place in the fall class with the intent of transferring to Berkeley (or Cal Poly or other) in Junior year? Or is that kind of track something you would have to setup in the fall prior?

Admission to a CC seems to happen an hour or two after you apply:

However, you may want to check when the CCs open their schedules for registration, so that you can apply and be admitted so that you are ready to register as soon as registration opens.

http://www.assist.org can help you by showing you what CC courses can cover major requirements for transfer to your intended majors and target UC and CSU campuses. For some majors, you may have to look around several CCs to cover as many of the requirements as possible.
