CA in state residency help

Hello everybody,

If recently been in the process of bringing my fiancé to the United States as part of our plan I want to put her through college and I’m aware of the residency requirement she is from Sweden and I’m aware she may be charged a larger sum than in state tuition, wed love to know if there are acceptions for married couples to qualify for in state tuition if I’ve been a California resident my whole life? Any help will be greatly appreciated and even if this isn’t the case any advice from people who’ve been through the residency hurdles is also greatly appreciated. Thank you all

From what I am told, yes if you are an instate resident and you get married, your wife pretty much immediately gets residency in California for tuition purposes. I’m sure there are exceptions and gotchas but that’s the main premise.

So you reckon I won’t have to wait the full 366 days if she comes in

Sounds pretty immediate, according to this article:

Now that I read up on things more, she more likely would need to be in California for 366 days first in order to get the in-state tuition rate. Better to check with financial aid on this.

I would call any target school to confirm as suggested by @ProfessorPlum168. Also California community colleges vs. UC’s and Cal states may determine California residency for tuition purposes differently.
