parent of CA high school junior, SAT 2200, SAT MII 800, lots of AP, around 3.9 GPA (unweighted), 4.5+ weighted...still a few months to go to settle down on the scores. Planning to take ACT, SAT Bio, SAT Chem.

Interested in medicine. Are there any good BSMD programs other than UCSD for CA kids? Out of state will be expensive but WUE may work because of reduced tution. Are there any good BSMD in WUE network? Are there any chances to get scholarships in BSMD pgms? My understanding is that chances of scholarships are less as there is not much incentive to schools to offer merit or ride.

Am I in the wrong forum?

Well hello there @sm577501

Senior right now in HS and finally finished with the college admissions process. Hopefully I can give you my 2c’s!

Anyways, first of all surely your son is not solely applying to BS/MD Programs right? Their acceptance rates are abysmally low and quite honestly, unless your son is sure about pursuing a career in medicine FOR SURE. And with no HESITATION. Then apply to a few, ALONG with more regular UG schools.

Also why not any BS/DO Programs? DO’s are certainly as well educated and well respected in the medical field today as well as having some easier requirements and standards in GPA and SAT scores.

But there is no other BS/MD Program other than UCSD, however don’t be afraid to look at linkage programs such as Cal State Fullerton to some great MD and DO schools as well as Mills College and several other schools with linkage programs. Why only apply to California BS/MD Programs anyways? Your son will have a much greater chance applying out of state as well to more than just one bs/md program. (p.s. your son is ineligible to apply to the UCSD BS/MD program unless he is given an invitation to apply, the option is there on the application but you will not be considered unless you are invited)

About the scholarships, you will be given MERIT scholarships regardless of being in the program, any other scholarships your son will have to apply for himself and/or financial aid. However, any merit scholarships will only be for the affiliated undergraduate institution. Medical schools will not give any scholarships to students 4 years away from even POSSIBLY matriculating.

In short, don’t be afraid to apply to BS/DO Programs, apply to not only one but to multiple because chances are slim. I was granted around 7 interviews and accepted into 2 BS/MD Programs and 1 BS/DO Program.

Nonhanks a lot for the info!

How important is guaranteed MD admission now? If you don’t get it in BSMD in UCSD is it still worth doing UG in one of the UCs and then try MD instate compared to going out of CA for some potentially expensive BSMD pgm (assuming you get it some other place). This is the question of living outside CA for 8+ yrs. Is it taking a big chance to do UG in one of UCs than taking BSMD outside?

I know this depends on how much scholarship one gets in outside pgm.

I think for certainty he is very sure to pursue med profession.

Our goal is to minimize total cost for 8 yrs and hence looking to exhaust CA options.

By the way which are the other Non CA good pgms for his range in your opinion? What should be the cost budget we should keep in mind?

Thanks again! Any info you can provide are very valuable to me.

Well as I am also new to the process myself I can only impart so much of my knowledge. However, with my research that I’ve done I would honestly say if given the opportunity for a BSMD program, take it. It’s like the saying a bird in your hand is better than two in a bush. With the rise of more competitive, cutthroat students and the MCAT averages and GPA averages on the rise, it’ll become more and more difficult to apply for med school.

Once again I say, if he does not get into the UCSD BSMD program, without a doubt he should try for one of the UC’s+Instate Med School, but I must add that CA Med Schools have VERY VERY high standards, even some of the most brilliant students with gleaming EC’s, research, shadowing and volunteering are denied. Which is why I say always apply out, these out of state BSMD programs are great as well, obviously it’s up to your son if he’s willing to live out of state or not.

CA options are very good to begin with so if he’s willing to go the traditional route as well, it’s certainly viable.

Some of the most popular programs are with Villanova/Drexel, Drexel/Drexel, Brown PLME, Case Western, Rice/Baylor to name a few off the top of my head. But don’t be afraid to apply to some of the lower tiered programs, it’s a medical degree after all! No matter where he goes he’ll still be a doctor so don’t let school prestige be the determining factor.

Once again don’t be afraid of applying to BS/DO programs, with his stats he’ll have a higher opportunity to become a doctor instead of relying on a BS/MD program.

can you please list a few BS/DO programs? which BS/MD programs did you get seleted for?
I am almost certain UCSD doesn’t participate in WUE - so get ready tor the full bill. Your son has stellar stats. A private might be a more cost effective option via merit scholarships. Take a look at USD, Santa Clara, LMU among others.
I know little about BS/MD programs so, i will stop there.
