CA kids: how are budget cuts affecting your school?

Everybody is on pins and needles at my HS right now. We're cutting counselors and teachers that don't have tenure :( and it really sucks cuz the teachers who are bad have tenure and the ones that are good don't. Like the new AP Art history program is probably going to get axed. Ap German adn French, as well as APES might get cut. Plus we already have like a thousand kid to one counselor but they're cutting a counselor as well. And there's going to be 40 so kids in each class instead of 20, especially for APs. Student Services, peer counseling and college counseling center are all probably going to get cut too. kids from FFA went to plead their case in front of the school board but it didn't work; their program is getting the ax.

I HATE BUDGET CUTS :/ over 55 ppl in my district are going to be without a job.. some of them have been at my school for over 20 years ( counselors, etc.)

I hear you :(

They're cutting 40% of my district's teachers.

My math teacher said class sizes will be about 40 kids per class for us too :(

I will cry if they cut AP French. I was looking forward to taking it. Argh.

My mom is a teacher, and she already wrote to congressmen/representatives, and some of the teachers might go on strike so who knows right now.

physiology is getting cut at my school, which is very sad because that was actually my favorite class that I took the past 4 years

a young history teacher who is awesome is also being let go due to the budget cuts... this guy is so down to earth, and such a great teacher, but as you said the teachers who are bad have tenure and can't be axed... instead, it's the good, young teachers that are being fired

these budget cuts are horrible, and I hate to see this happen to my school... especially to teachers that truly do not deserve to be treated this way

tenure is a joke, some of these old teachers are so bad, yet they cannot be let go!

^ yeah !! the out of touch, old teachers who everybody hates are staying on and the new, good AP teachers are getting cut !! WTH??

i really want to organize something in protest but i'm not quite sure how to go about it.

i heard on NPR today about Da Vinci HS in Davis. out of 12 English teachers, they're cutting 9. how on earth is that even feasible ??!!!!

I think I'm just out of the range of being affected, but I live right next to a district that is being cut. Definitely sucks.

I honestly don't think there is anything we, or the teachers, can do about this
what is more ridiculous is that some principals are being fired in my area!

Wow that's horrible, esp for the big public schools.

Why are they cutting budgets?

^Because the state is in debt and wants to balance the budget. Also cuts from Medicare, etc.

Erm it's been crazy among the young teachers...

I'm in MN, and I've already been through huge budget cuts--it effing sucks. Think 2 counselors for 2,000 kids, classes that are defined as "small" if they're less than 40 students, and folders so stuffed with photocopied textbooks you can't fit any homework in.

This year, the budget for our Social Studies and English departments was $0. My teacher spent his income tax return on copies of "The Grapes of Wrath."

^ OMG. that's terrible. how do the counselors survive ?! think of all those letters of rec they have to write!

yeah, my school wasted so much money from the PTSA on Smart Boards that cost $$$$ for GEOSCIENCE, MATH AND HISTORY teachers that never even use them. i bet they're regretting that decision now... i remember last year my APEC teacher got a Smart Board and she used it ONCE the entire year. and that was to demonstrate how the thing worked. my math teacher uses his to listen to iTunes.
