For NU's supplemental essay, is 250 words a minimum or maximum? Or just a general benchmark? I ask because I'm close to reaching 250 but I still haven't gotten through some important points I wanted to bring up. I expect it to be about 300-350 words long.

Everyone on here seems to say around 250 words. Mine was 350, which was a single, double-spaced page. Don’t worry too much about the length, worry about the content :)

250 is a “maximum” that you’re supposed to hover around. I think 350 is not the best idea (Sorry Cherrylee). They come up with that number for a reason, so you should try to stick close to it. You can say everything you need to say in 250, because you don’t need to be wordy. Don’t make some gigantic verbose literary masterpiece, just write.

Alright, well I already submitted it, and it was at around 310 words. However, it stayed on one page, and on the actual PDF that NU receives, it doesn’t even show the word count for the supplement, so I’m hoping it won’t hurt me at all. Hopefully…

I am sure, they do not have time to count the number of words in a PDF file…so you will be fine. Good Luck!

All of the word counts on the applications are general recommendations. It’s not a hard limit, so much as it’s to discourage people from submitting novels.

Yeah unfortunately i actually noticed the word count after i submitted my application, with around 600 words. I figure the more they read about me loving northwestern the better.

hmm, the essay limit confused me as well.
everyone said quality > quantity and didn’t specify a max word count…i’m assuming as long as you said everything you needed to, you should be fine.
good luck! :)
