You have two reasons to be congratulated today. First, on your decision to attend UC Berkeley, the #1 ranked public University in the country. Secondly, you have advanced to the finalist round for The Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious awards at UC Berkeley.

Your Next Steps:

You will be contacted in the next week by a UC Berkeley Alumni District Chair. They will schedule your interview date and time. If you live in an area where an in-person interview is not possible, you will be notified of a phone interview date and time. A requirement is that you must be available for an interview during May 9th - June 8th, 2009. If you cannot make an interview (in person or by phone) or do not respond after three (3) attempts to be contacted, you will be disqualified as a candidate and no longer under consideration for this scholarship. We appreciate your flexibility in advance.

I did too! Congrats killthefifi
The email says that it’s one of the most prestigious awards at UC Berkeley. Does anyone know how many people get it each year? And how many people advance to finals? I’m just curious as to my chances of getting it. Thanks!

I got it as well. I’m wondering how steep the cut was for this first step and how steep it’ll be for the next step as well. Hopefully the economy this year won’t screw things up, because I feel like it’s affected pretty much every scholarship out there.

Haha I just realized how lame out college application year is: a perfect storm of a record number of applicants with an economy scare/crash/whatever you want to call it.

BTW for anyone who’s curious, a friend of mind has this award. Not only do you get the money but you also get a card with your photo on it that gives you random perks like discounts at the bookstore. Plus you get a banquet with the other winners and I imagine some good connections early on. Hope I get it!

i was reading this newsletter thing and it says:
The Alumni Scholarship Program awards more than $1 million to some 1000 undergraduates (only citizens or residents) who demonstrate strong leadership skills in campus, community, or job activities. Scholarships given range from $1,500 to 2,500 per year. The Alumni Scholarship Leadership Award is one of the most prestigious awards on the Berkeley campus. Awarded based on student leadership, Alumni Leadership Scholars represent the excellence of Cal students when they step outside the classroom–either on campus or in the community. From more than ten thousand initial applicants, only a few hundred Alumni Scholarship Leadership Finalists will be invited to interview with an alumni representative. Each of those Finalists will compete to earn a share of the more than $1.3 million in renewable scholarships handed out by Berkeley alumni each year.

how was the interview - was it panel style or individual, random/predictable questions, etc?
and where are you from? i still havent been contacted for my interview :/

Each region has it’s own alumni group so there may be some differences in different regions

If you are not able to make the interview in person, definitely do the phone interview with the CAA office

Remember, you must reapply every year, so if you did not get it this year, try again, if you do get it this year, be sure to be active and involved on campus with ECs so that you have something to talk about next year They will want to see if you lived up to your potential

They are looking for leadership, but it does not have to be boring and ordinary, be as creative as you want. Maybe you are a leader for your little brother or at work, maybe you are ASB president or maybe you lead by example, all are good if you can support it.

It’s a great award and the people involved are very helpful

hey i got the e-mail for the finalist. However, I have not been informed about the interview. Do you usually schedule interview through phone? If it is, should I call them?
I am kind of being paranoid cuz i leave the State early in June, and I do not want to miss the interview!!!

you should probably call them if they havent contacted you by now but i got an email from a specific alumni near my area. i dont think interviews are in june though i think most of them are in may

I had my interview tonight. It was held at an alum’s house, and there was a panel of three alumni doing the interviews. They were all really nice. It was laid back, and the questions were what you’d expect. Definitely no curve balls. I guess it could be different depending on what your local alumni want to do, though. Good luck everyone!

Anyone figure out how many people total end up getting the scholarship in the end? Is it like one person per region or something?
