I applied early decision to Cal Poly in the Recreation, Parks & Tourism major with an emphasis on special event planning. It's in the Agriculture college.

Do I have a shot? I've been in almost all honors and AP classes, too. Getting misdiagnosed for 7 months really brought my grades down. I was a 4.0 student until I got sick, and I'm a 4.2 student now after I was properly diagnosed and given medication to ease the pain. However, my heart still aches when I think about my low GPA. Yikes.

“and I’m a 4.2 student now after I was properly diagnosed and given medication to ease the pain.”

So are you a “Weighted: 3.37” or a “4.2” ??

sorry for the misunderstanding <_<

Oh I’m sorry, in my senior year I have a 4.2. Which really is irrelevant to colleges which is a huge bummer. My weighted GPA is going to be 3.3 no matter what, I think.

In that case you are a reach at Cal Poly SLO. Average weighted at Cal Poly SLO is about 3.88–and your SAT I is slightly below average also.

Sorry.

Your stats are a match for Cal Poly Pomona if you want to apply there. Personally I’m guessing schools will take your bad grades in the one year into account if you explain it–and then your chances might improve quite a bit–but the SATs are still just a bit low.

You could also try UC Santa Cruz or UC Riverside where I think you might be able to get in if you explain your illness. Santa Cruz in particular is very understanding for people with problems such as yours, and will work with you to make sure such problems will be considered/monitored even while at the university. You might also consider smaller colleges where personal attention (if you need it) will be provided. Some Christian college do this: examples might be someplace like Westmont, University of San Diego, or University of Redlands. If you want to stay with non-denominational schools in the state, consider the ones I’ve already mentioned or a local Cal State that specializes in whatever you want to major in.

Thanks so much for your reply! The only thing is that the college at Cal Poly that I’m applying to has an average GPA of 3.5. Since Cal Poly applicants’ competition is only the students of their same major, I thought I had a shot. Compared to the Fall 2007 stats, my SATs are exactly their average, my ACT is two points higher, but my GPA is still .2 below. Still a reach? :(

Thanks again for your reply!

I Got In!!!
