cable tv and high-speed internet in dorms?

hmm I've never even heard of that position before.
The job I had was for the Student Technology Center, which is located across the courtyard from Covel Commons (built underneath Delta Terrace).
They employ student computer technicians (what I did) and cashiers. The techs work in the back fixing computers that students bring in with a wide variety of problems (although the most common is viruses). There is also one designated field tech (also what I did) who gets called out to people's rooms to fix hardware (not their personal hardware, but the stuff UCLA-owned) - anything from replacing the network jack to pulling an entire defective blade of the server out.

I don't work there anymore, so I cant really actively help you out. But check out the website www.resnet.ucla.edu and either call and talk to Eugene (the lead tech) or just fax in your resume and they'll call you back. I know that they are very interested in new techs towards the end of summer. About a month and a half before school starts, stuff really starts picking up at the STC because they have to walk through every single room in the dorms to check for major hardware problems, as well as get ready for everyone moving in. As long as you're decently good troubleshooting computer problems, I don't think you'll have a problem.

Are we allowed to use the internet for games and....stuff? Is UCLA gonna know what I'm doing on the net or what websites I visited?

yes you can use it for games. and no, as I said, UCLA doesn't keep track of your usage - there is no point for them to do so.
When I play Counter-strike, my ping time tends to be in the single digits if I get a good server.

"As long as you're decently good troubleshooting computer problems"
heh what do you mean by that Icarus? I don't consider myself a hardcore "tech" person but I am knowledgable on computers and I learn fast... What kind of experiences do you need for this job (ie. I am also interest)?

no dont' worry about it - thats fine :) I learned a lot as I was working. I definitely wasn't a hardcore tech guy either.

ah tahts awsome. I would like to do this tech thing too... but how time consuming is it? will it eat up my schedule?

not really - obviously, they work around your class schedule. You'll probably work about 8-10 hours a week spread out over two shifts. (Not bad when you consider that I have 8- or 16-hour shifts at my current job ;)) And STC is open 7am-midnight mon-thurs (til 6 on friday), so theres a wide range of possible times.

"either call and talk to Eugene (the lead tech) or just fax in your resume and they'll call you back"
is the telephone number (310) 825-3400?
email techctr@stc.resnet.ucla.edu ?

oh yeah i meant time consuming as in, how many other extracirruclar activities can you fit in?

I've been heavily usurping the Internet connection for games and... stuff... since my freshman year here, and I'm pretty sure the STC doesn't care.

yeah those are right, westow

i'm not sure what you're asking - its just like any other job. Its up to you to budget your time for as many things as you want
