Don’t start that laundry yet! Cadet Wing Media has begun posting photos. Go go www.printroom.com/pro/afaphotos.

Wow! Thanks for the link. I don't know how all of you find these things.

Also, can anyone tell me what a "wing" is? Is it the whole 2011 class?

I'm off to look at more pictures. ( :

Thanks for the heads up Jwags. Didn't know that group existed and/or posted BCT photos. In summary, I guess there are three guys out there taking shots for us (AOG/Webguy/Wing)?

Spotted S again on that site (we're on a roll!), this time getting his haircut. He's on page 3 (of 7) and should have been going thru the I-day activities pretty early (he was there at 8:30 am to meet his coach before boarding the buses). Thus if you know about what time your cadet walked into USAFA you might be able to gauge where his/her haircut picture might be on this series (i.e. before or after mine S...).

I'll tell you what - if anyone ever complains that they didn't know what thier S or D was doing during the BCT period then they certainly weren't watching all of these Galleries! Thanks to the three system operators (and thier huge capacity digital cameras) for making this important period in our kids lives easier to see and understand.

you can add AFA to that list. Did find two good pictures out of all those. One getting poked with a needle and one with his rifle. I'll make sure to count his toes next time I see him. :-)

The cadet wing refers to all of the cadets at the academy. It is broken up into wing then group then squadron, and then in BCT you have a flight.

Wing = All classes of cadets roughly 4,000
4 groups to the wing. 10 squadrons to a group. Thus Squadrons 1 through 10 = Group 1, Squadrons 11 through 20 = Group 2 etc. (used to be only 36 squadrons but they recently added back the last 4). Each squadron has so many flights (usually 4) and then each flight has so many elements (I forget).

Thanks for the explanations. I still have some questions and need some clarification. Since the wing includes all the cadets at the academy and there are 4 groups to the wing, are the 4 groups the four classes - 4th class cadets, 3rd class cadets, 2nd class cadets, and 1st class cadets?

Negative works like this

Squad
Flight mine = Barbarians-4 CS-08
Squadron= Barbarians in the fall all of CS-08 4dig, 3dig, 2dig, and 1dig
Group= 10 squadrons combine to make a group
Wing= 4 Groups combine to make the wing

During the summer they only have the Squadrons A,B, C etc.
That way select upperclassmen "Cadre" of 1dig and 2dig cadets have leadership roles and train/commaned the new basics. Each flight B-4 will fold in to their squadron in a month and become the new underclass.

Sorry B-4 will fold into CS-08 with the CS-08 upperclassmen to make a Squadron...Clear as mud?

Mud - yes. Clear - no, not for someone like me who has never been in the military, but I do appreciate your effort to help educate me.

I looked at the explanation of squadrons at this site http://www.usafaclasses.org/2011/FAQs-Squadrons.html but I am still not sure of some of it.

I see that there are forty of what I thought were called flights but what you must be calling squadrons since you said there are forty squadrons. So these forty squadrons are divided into four groups of ten squadrons each with 4,3,2, and 1 digs included. Is that right?

If that is right, could you explain this part a little more for me, and what does CS-08 mean?

"Flight mine = Barbarians-4 CS-08
Squadron= Barbarians in the fall all of CS-08 4dig, 3dig, 2dig, and 1dig"

Thanks so much for taking the time.

What they are calling squadrons now Agressors; Barbarians etc each contain four flights. A-1 A-2 A-3 A-4. This is for the summer together the four flights are a squadron. When academic year begins A-1 will join the upperclass 3dig; 2dig and 1dig cadets from CS-01 Cadet squadron 1 and together they will be Cadet Squadron 1 = A1 Basics newly minted 4 degrees + shuffled 3 Degrees + exsiting 2 Degrees and 1 Degrees will combine and become CS-01 or Cadet Squadron 1. Lather rinse repeat with Agressors 2 only they will join Cadet Squadron 2.

Okay, I get it. Surprised, aren't you?

One more question and I will quit. Why are the 3 degrees shuffled and what does that mean?

It would not be a good idea to keep them in the same Squadron...Hard feelings from training. By shuffling the 3 degrees they get a fresh start and so do the upper classmen

Okay- your doing great, for us non-military type
Here is another quick question
Will our basic keep their same room-mate until they switch at
semester ?

Depends on the squad. In mine last year I had new room mates for 1st semester, then I switched one of them out for 2nd semester. But, each squadron may assign or allow the Basics/4 digs figure out their own rooms at first.

Okay-thanks

I was at a parents meeting tonight and it was said that the cadre the basics have now will probably be in their same squadron. Is this true?

The Cadre they are working with are selected upperclassmen from their Academic year squadron. They have been chosen and gone through special training to perform these duties. I am not sure that becuase a squadron (Aggressors) which has basics that will be distributed among four Academic squadrons 1,2,3,4 the cadre may be able to move across the squads but I don't think they do.

In the past years and for my Basic, it used to be that they had a few cadre from the squadron you're going into and the rest were from others. I can't speak for the Academy on why it was changed, but I do know that this year every single cadre working a flight is from those basics' Ac year squadron.

As for the selection, once the AOC (Air Officer Commanding) is chosen for a Basic squadron, he/she picks the cadres from a group of applicants. Then those cadets go through a pretty intense training with the real TI's (Training Instructors) from Lackland. There's also an OI (Operating Instructions) test that every cadre has to take, and if you fail you cannot work BCT.

jwags thanks for the info on the photos. I saw the two great ones of your son. He even looked happy to get a shot.<g> And I did have to get to the laundry and a thousand other things so thanks for the heads-up. Did not see my son except a right eye and ear, lol, but did see three great photos in line for weapons and searching for weapon. Pictures were so clear I could read his name tag. Just wish he looked up for a change. At least he's always studying. Since Son worked for a personal safety expert, and many duties at a gun range for the last three years, he'll be disappointed the weapons don't work. <vbg>
Dan it was nice to see a picture where I could recognize Mike. The short hair and big glasses really throw me off.
Thanks also to ds52262 for all the military info. H is a pilot but always civilian and the military info is a learning process.</vbg></g>
