Cadets to march in inaugural parade

Cadet 1st Class Ian Black will salute the newly sworn-in President Barack Obama in the nation’s Capitol on Jan. 20. Cadet Black is this semester’s cadet commander for Cadet Squadron 4, and will lead 92 of his squadron’s fellow cadets in the 56th Inaugural Parade.

“The U.S. military has participated in this important American tradition since members of the U.S. Army, local militia units and Revolutionary War veterans escorted George Washington to his first inauguration ceremony,” said Maj. Gen. Richard J. Rowe, Jr., Military District of Washington Commander, and Armed Forces Inauguration Committee chairman.

During the ten-day inaugural period leading up to Jan. 20, more than 5,000 service personnel will provide ceremonial support to the 56th Presidential Inaugural. This support is traditionally comprised of musical units, marching bands, color guards, salute batteries and honor cordons to render appropriate ceremonial honors to the new Commander in Chief.

The Air Force Academy has been part of every Inaugural Parade since the 43rd Presidential Inauguration, of President Eisenhower in 1957.

Cadet Squadron 4 will march the 1.7 mile route from Capitol Hill to the White House, to pass the President, members of the Cabinet, Congress and other dignitaries on the reviewing stand. When passing the reviewing stand, it is traditional for the unit commander to render a salute to the reviewing officials for his or her entire unit.

Cadet Squadron 4 represents the Air Force and the Air Force Academy, by virtue of being the outstanding cadet squadron for 2008. Cadet squadrons compete for this honor throughout the academic year, via a performance-based system which evaluates academic and military performance.

The 56th Inaugural Parade’s exact start time has not been announced. However, the parade will immediately follow the swearing-in and inaugural address of the new president, which begins at noon, EST on Jan. 20.

cool.. congrats to them. i know a few folks in 4

Our cadet is in 4 and pretty excited about going. What a once in a lifetime experience!

I'll be competing for that 2012 spot hopefully!

and we'll be gone. how sad.

That's the first time I've seen "sad" and "Missmuff" in the same post!

BTW - Congrats on Dean's List! Are you counting the days until Recognition?

Wow. That's pretty neat-o. What a great experience for them.

=) thanks! wait...who are you again? lol I forget how everyone on here is related/who's watching me.

on the topic of recognition-I'll admit, I was very apprehensive coming back from Christmas, but I had a couple of really good conversations with some wise upperclassmen, went through the best training session I've ever had, and now I'm not counting, just taking it all in. I've found the worst part of anything here (for me) is the apprehension. so for now, I'll just enjoy greeting people I know as loudly and as obnoxiously as possible, and leave the counting to my all-to-eager classmates.

but I digress... ;)

Absolutely true. More great wisdom from missmuff!

Oh great and now her already large ego will grow... ;)

I am not countin, merely concentrating on other things like academics and such...

CS 4 sure looked sharp coming down Pennsylvania Avenue today! ...As did the Marching Band while they played the AF song! They represented the entire Wing very well. Congrats! :)

On a side note - President Obama will be the one to sign all current cadet's comissions. Interesting thought that the class of 2009-12 actually had a chance to vote for whose signature they wanted. I guess my class will have the same opportunity four years down the road. [This is not a political statement nor do I wish to have an argument started over this. It is merely an observation.]

that is true. i was shocked how quickly our new Commander's face replaced out old commander in the halls, where we have pictures of our entire chain of command

Has anyone found a video of this? I missed it today.

i haven't seen one online yet, but i did record one on my external. only thing is its kind of large for e-mail. they rly didn't show the cadet at all. it was more mentioning that it was the "Air Force section" of the parade, and then they discussed how Obama was like George Washington. you could see the squad comm and guidon kind of, and that there were cadets there, but not much else (from the channel i watched/recorded)

try this

Obama Inaugural Parade 283482-1 : C-SPAN Video Library | Created by Cable. Offered as a Public Service.

yeah, our new commander-in-chief's picture replaced bush's in seconds.. ridiculously fast. haha

Vice President Biden was actually Frmr. President Bush's VP for a couple of minutes, then he was President from 1200 to about 1205... until President Obama was sworn in.

ahhh i heard this was debunked yesterday.

they say that obama was prez at 1200 either way, so i dunno. lol

Hmmm... my teacher must have been wrong then.... lol oh well.
