Cake or cupcake and what’s your favorite flavor?

Genoise cake with white chocolate mascarpone frosting, I have hazelnut praline in the filling. It’s pretty decadent, and I make it once a year around Christmas time.

Black forest cake

Last weekend we were in Baltimore for a tournament, and my daughter had a day off so of course we had to go to DC for the Great Cupcake Taste Off - Sprinkles v DC Cupcakes. My daughter is a cupcake fanatic.

We got all hot and sweaty walking the Mall and then off to Georgetown to get the goodies. Found a parking spot near Sprinkles and got them. Hiked a few blocks to DC Cupcakes. The line was enormous! We couldn’t wait.

The winner by default was Sprinkles. Very good.

By DC Cupcakes, are you referring to Georgetown Cupcake? I have had both Sprinkles and Georgetown . Both good. I like both cake and cupcakes, vanilla more than chocolate. Like lots of frosting. Love carrot cake, black forest cake. Cupcakes with interesting flavors are cool. I had a green tea cupcake once that was very interesting. With cupcakes, you can potentially try a couple different flavors.

Yes, I guess it was Georgetown CC, the one that was a food network show.

We have one close that has mini cupcakes. I like those because you can eat one little one or 3 little ones of different flavors. And mini cupcakes have no calories, right?

I like my frosting less sweet than the recipes call for, but then, when I cut the amount of sugar, sometimes it’s not stiff enough.

When this thread popped back up in my feed, it made me smile. My MIL’s 95th birthday was in April, and we got a chocolate sheet cake from Costco. The assisted living facility served the cake after lunch, and pretty much every resident stopped over to thank us for sharing … they all seem to love chocolate cake!

Posted this in 2021. I did not get a doll cake for my 65th birthday (a few months ago), but did find a bakery which had a “birthday princess cake” with roses and a plastic tiara decorations. I ordered it in my favorite cake flavor with my favorite icing. Roses were pink at my request.

It was worth it!

I’ve made the ballgown cake, and even have the plastic head in with my kitchen stuff. It was for one of my daughters, and I think the gown was pink. You can make it with the mixing bowl from Pampered Chef.

I missed this thread the first time around. My fave cake is Lemon Chiffon or some variation on that (I often use whatever citrus I have on hand). It’s similar to an Angel Food Cake, but uses the egg yolks too. Very light. Sometimes I top it with a little lemon or orange glaze. I’m not a huge fan of frosting, but I do like some homemade frosting. So much of the frosting on a bakery made cake or store bought cake is too sweet for me. Made my daughter a Carrot Cake with orange cream cheese frosting for her graduation. That was pretty good.

Baked and Wired was our preferred cupcake shop in DC/Georgetown

Thanks to this thread I’ll be making a stop at a new cake bakery that opened recently here. Stay tuned whether I get cake or cupcakes.

I made a doll cake for my niece 30+ years ago. She loved it. I took a couple cake decorating classes when my kids were little, and I made some really great cakes. D’s favorite was a Babar cake, and S loved his snake cake. I don’t know if I will pull out my cake decorating stuff for GD … the process is ridiculously messy, and my patience just isn’t what it used to be!

About a year ago I found a recipe for a lemon Bundt cake with drizzle icing. It was absolutely beautiful and delicious but between the cake and the icing had so much sugar I’ve been afraid to make it again.

I got some cupcakes from a local shop to celebrate my mom’s birthday today…I can’t wait to try this method out!

And BTW, my flavor of choice today was Chocolate Snowball :yum:

Peach Bavarian is a fabulous cake, which I believe is made only in Hawaii. It’s a chiffon cake with a refreshing, light gelatin with peach flavoring frosting.

Chocolate Dobash is another Hawaii cake. I believe Haupia cakes are also a Hawaii specialty.

I tried the “correct way to eat a cupcake” last night. Cut off the bottom half and flip it on top of the frosting for a cupcake sandwich. Actually a winning method! It was a strawberry shortcake cupcake!

I prefer cake to cupcakes, but I will have to try the “correct way” the next time I have a cupcake.

Favorite flavor? As long as it’s moist, pretty much any flavor, but I’d have to put carrot cake with cream cheese frosting in the top percentile.
