<p>I would not be surprised if a lot of those computers that you assume to be “Windows computers” are running Linux or even (appropriately) BSD.</p>

<p>Most CS majors use Macs, most “EE majors” (EECS people focusing on EE) use Windows.</p>
<p>Here is why:</p>
<p>Mac OS X is a UNIX. It has a pretty front, but if you’re good enough to dig below it, it is a really powerful multi-user operating system built on top of a design that has been world-tested for over 40yr+.</p>
<p>Almost all the CS professors use Macs, and most of the top students I know of also use Macs.</p>
<p>You also have a group of people who are a little more frugal, and that group generally tends to use some Linux distribution (eg. Ubuntu).</p>
<p>Yes, Windows is still around, but it’s the minority and none of the professors use it.</p>
