Cal Cycling/Bringing bikes

Hey fellow Bears,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on whether I should bring my road bike to Cal or not. Shipping is not an issue because I only live a city away...

The issue is that it is a rather expensive bike, and anyone who has even the faintest knowledge of good bikes could easily spot it a mile away. That's what makes me worried. I have a road racing bike (Red Specialized Allez 24spd - looks like an S-works frame though) that I would probably never part with, and I am afraid that someone at Cal could come along and take some of my parts while my bike was parked and locked somewhere.

This brings me to my next concern: I want to join Cal's cycling group, but I don't know where I'd put my bike. Where do Cal cycling team members put their fancy, $2000 bikes? Surely not in a public bike locking place thing right? Not in their dorms?

if you live in a suite, there's space in the main room

Oh, I think I will be living in Deustch Hall...will there be room there?

i don't know anything about deustch hall, but what kind of housing situation do you have there? double? triple? suite?

Deutsch is unit 1 and there are no suites there. The room will be too small for the bike. Bike racks for unit 1 are located in the middle of the inner courtyard. There's no way I'd leave a bike like that there.

I know nothing about it, but Google found me this:

P&T : Programs : Secure Bicycle Parking

Also, make sure to register your bike with the police. It's technically required but many people overlook this step.

green, I would say wait awhile before shipping your bike. Try to secure a safe indoor parking spot first and then ship your bike. Bike theft is pretty high, especially with a nice bike. Someone at the Cal cycling club might eventually help you out there.

This being said, Berkeley is a great place to ride, the roads up on grizzly Peak and east of that are a fantastic riding park, for either road or mountain bikes.
