I need help deciding between Cal EECS and Caltech. I am truly passionate about engineering but still have great interest in politics (I’ll be joining the Republican club, so liberals: try to stay tolerant!), law, and business. Caltech is reputably the best education money can buy but I haven’t seen it ranked at the top. I’ve heard horror stories how you are required to take senior-level science classes during your freshman year, regardless your major.

On the other side, Caltech has the best student faculty ratio (3:1) in the country, I believe. And it’s reputation will carry one a long way.

I’m also interested in Berkeley’s EECS Honors program. It requires a 3.7, how hard is that (I know they don’t do any Ivy League inflation ********)? I come from a small private school in the bay area and love competition…but I do want to have a life and hit up a party every few days…Does anyone know anything about the Honors program? Are there any perks?

BOTTOM LINE: What do ya’ll say: Cal or Tech? Bears or Beavers?

From everything I've read if you goto Cal Tech all you'll be doing 24/7 is problems, this can be a good or a bad thing but if you want to anything besides science Cal Tech probably isn't the right choice.

Caltech isn't an engineering school. It's a math/science school. It's just that when you're great in math you can be pretty good in engineering too. So in that respect, I think Cal is a better engineering school. EECS honor program? 3.7? LoL. Look at my GPA. I'm engineering. My friends are EECS. LoL. We're suffering here. 3.7? That sounds far from possible. Ok, trust me, there are many who do it though.

You want a life? Parties? We got tons of that here. Trust me. I live at Clark Kerr Campus, probably the worst place for an engineer. LoL. We party all the time, and my grades suffer unfortunately, but its all good. Umm, which HS do you come from? I come from Monta Vista, and well... Berkeley is MV all over again =|
