Cal, Emory, and Cornell?

Hello, I'm applying undecided to all three of these, arts and sciences or w/e at cal, and CAS at cornell. this is kinda reachy though i think. OH and southern cal too please

Location: CA

ACT: 27, but math 28 and english 32

AP's: Span- 5 Eng- 4 US History- 3

GPA: 3.8ish uc
3.28 for emory/cornell/ USC

ECs listed on app: football, track, was in 2 clubs, and work. also did summer school

Job/Work Experience: did finances that were really receipts at a family friend's company and also had a job there too

Essays (subject and responses): pretty darn good.and on two good issues

Teacher Recs: better than great

Counselor Rec: great

School Type: Private, does not rank

Ethnicity: Hispanic

Gender:M

i'm thinking i have a shot at cal and emory and usc, and slim to none at cornell. but that's just me, i just want to know what kind of shot i have. thank you

Eh…Cornell is a reach for you, mate. Maybe. Low reach.

Cal’s a good in. USC…high match? I think so.

Cornell:-reach
Emory:-high match
UC:-match

note: uc gpa is the one where the avg at cal is like a 4.14 so nobody’s confused.

and for brownie points, i played against jahvid best in hs and shook his hand lol

GPA looks a tad low, but it’s not abysmal…also, you need SAT IIs. Scores on those?

Cornell- High reach
Emory- Low match/slight reach maybe
Cal- Match
USC- Low reach

oh yeah sat IIs: spanish 790 ya! …lit 580…ugh

cal’s a reach

How is cal a match? That is pretty ridiculous. I’m sorry but the UCs don’t practice Affirmative Action, so your race gives you equal standing with the whites and asians. I’m going to go on a limb and say Cal is a big reach and USC is a reach.

By the way what are your subject test scores? Because Cal is a UC and the UCs require the subjects.
I don’t mean to sound mean but the average gpa at cal is ~4.1+ and the average SAT score is ~2050.

scores are above. and i’m applying to ED II for Emory, not sure how much it helps that low match/slight reach

um Emory and Cornell are both reaches imo. ur SAT Lit is not good :(

Cal is also a reach for the same reason the guy above stated. ur GPA is not on par with other cal applicants

i think USC is also a reach too because of the people ur competeing with, even if ur hispanic there are a lot of other minorities with better stats

try applying to some other safeties! good luck with apps

yeah these are my higher schools that i’m applying to, i’ve already gotten into a few. btw, i don’t think any look at the sat II except for cal.

I hate to be a downer but they all look like reachs to me. Keep in mind, these are all REALLY hard schools, top 15 in the country! Definitely put in at least 3 good safeties in the mix. Take all of our words very lightly though since we all seem to be pretty critical. Good luck

ACT is a killer for Emory

I also agree that they are all reaches. But I also strongly suggest you still go for it. Because it IS absolutely possible, even the light of not-so-good SAT scores, to get accepted in top universities.

But that doesn’t mean it’s easy or likely. You will quite a stronger hook, and very well written essays. It CAN happen, but at the same time, don’t forget your safeties!

You guys should only post about schools that you know about, so you’re not giving the OP any incorrect information.

USC is somewhat doable, but Cal is DEFINITELY a reach.
Emory and Cornell are both reaches as well.

Good luck with USC! I applied there too, and it’s one of my top choices.

Julian, you are right…

I accidently wrote “all” in my above post, but to OP, I was talking specifically about Cornell.

Sorry for the mistake/lack of clarification

I would say you are a reach at all of these schools. Also, your UC GPA doesn’t make sense considering they do not count freshman year. Based on the amount of APs you posted, your weighted would not go up that much unless you had a truely terrible freshman year. Anyway, since its too late to apply to lower UCs, you should look OOS for some safeties.

Don’t listen to those people, you have a solid shot at most of the schools. If I were you…I would have applied to other competitive colleges…I think you’re in at Emory, and you have a good chance at Cal, and may have more trouble at USC. Your ethnicity will play a big factor, please do not believe that Cal will not take your ethnicity into account. Simply include your ethnicity, and background into your personal statement…I hope you did so, if not, you’re foolish. Cornell is really receptive to minority students…so you have a fairly decent shot. You should have considered: Rice, Brown, Darthmouth, Wesleyan (they love diversity), plus my other favorite is Pomona, a truly academic college. Safety schools: UCSD, UCSB, Case Western Reserve, Kenyon College, Bucknell, Occidental, Babson (if you’re really interested in business), and Colgate.

i applied to tons and as it stands right now i’m going to georgia tech, but if i can get into one of these then it’ll make for a more interesting decision. OH and the UC gpa makes sense since i’ve taken honors classes too along with cc classes.

btw GSW congrats on Georgia Tech, its my number two. I hope i see ya! Feel free to chance me to see if i can be ur classmate
