scguy has absolutely no idea what he is talking about. Safety at UCSD? What a joke. UCSD follows a pretty rigorous point system and none of the UCs practice AA, which was banned awhile ago.

You’re clueless…I wish you had a better understanding of the world. Why do you think the personal statement is used in the college admission process? Discrimination is considered unconstitutional, but…it happens daily in America. I can’t believe to buy into the utopian viewpoint of the college admission proces…He’s in at UCSD without a doubt!!

^Whatever you say chief and I never said I bought into that ‘utopian viewpoint’ of the college admission process. UCSD is definitely not a safety.

race is still viewed in UC admissionn…that’s all i wanted you to see…and i understand the legality of your argument.

Filling out racial information is optional in UC application; they do not look at races when picking applicants.
That’s why pretty much all UC schools have higher(much higher) percentage of asian and white student body than other prestigious private schools.
Reach for all schools, including UCSD…sorry for being so harsh.

some people don’t get it, and in your “private” world you’re right! i’m talking about how race is infused in the process…i’m well aware of the percentage of minorities enrolled at all of the UC campuses…hence, remember the arguments at ucla in 06 per the low percentage of african-american students…didn’t you see an influx over the next two years, and you still think race is not used as a criteria, what a blind america! minority applicants with solid scores, please do not hesitate to explain your ethnic background in your personal statement, it works- trust me.

well in defense of scguy, while the UC’s don’t go by race, they still go on unique circumstances, that counts in for quite a bit.

Influx of African-American students at UCLA over the two years?
Demographics from 2006 says African-American students made up 3% of the entire student body; the one for 2008 says that it is 3.3%. 0.3%? Wow, that is an amazing increase.

More URM students might have applied and been accepted, but the fact behind their acceptance is that THEY HAVE A SOLID STAT, meaning they are at least around the average stat of the campuses. Their under-represented status has nothing to do with their chances. They were simply already good enough for the college with their merits during school.

I also don’t know why you quoted “private”-- the only time I used the word was when describing college types. You reused it to mean some kind of secluded confinement of thought, and all I see behind is a bitter resentment of thought.

Check the actual # of students from 06/07/08, do you truly believe that academic standards of students increased in an academic cycle, if so, you’re “special”!!! I have some inside knowledge on the situation…so you won’t get it, sorry.

The number of African American freshmen admitted rose to 440 (3.7 percent), up from 407 (3.5 percent) last year, while the number of Latino/Chicano admitted freshmen increased to 1,682 (14.1 percent), from 1,474 (12.7 percent) in 2007. Native American freshmen numbered 42 (0.4 percent), compared with 45 (0.4 percent) last year.

Check the numbers from 06, and you will see the difference.

Even those stats are real, it doesn’t prove anything you’ve said. The increase is still way too minimal to conjecture that race is still being considered in the process, given that the stats vary EVERY YEAR. The biggest increase from your stats given is the admit rate for Latino/Chicano people, a 1.4% increase. I’m not seeing an “influx” of anything, but rather, just a bare increment. I’m still holding the idea that more intelligent URM applicants are applying to the UCs.

If by any chance race is a part of the UC admission process, being that certain races get certain percentages of admits, it then discounts your original argument that UCSD is a safety school for OP. The OP only has a chance to become a part of that low percentage of the admits, and as the OP’s stats are average at best, you can’t just go off to say that he is an automatic-in at UCSD.
