hey guys, im going to CAL next year as an engineering major. the only thing is i like to party and have fun. i heard that if im looking to party AND be an engineer major, i shouldnt go to CAL. i was told it is very hard and if i began to party i wouldnt be able to handle it. Is this true? and if so, maybe CAL isnt for me?

You'll have time to party, but definitely not every week or even close to that.

Partying and engineering don't mixed. Especially not at Berkeley.

hey student, when u say ill have time to party, but definately not every week or even cl,ose to that. do u mean like one friday night every 4 weeks or wat? ur help is greatly appreciated

partying an engineering probably would go well together at Cal unless you want to fail out of school....all i see the engineers ever do is study ALL day.

BTW, CAL is NOT an acronym

I'm a first year IEOR and here are my thoughts: First semester, I partied almost every weekend...at least drank every weekend, with 20 units courseload and maintained a 3.8+ gpa

Second semester, I had the option of partying but it got kinda boring...just chilled with the floormates every weekend (most saturdays were workfree except for the occasional paper). I had plenty of time off to relax. 19 units courseload and gpa was over 3.9.

I think if I studied instead of partied, my grades wouldn't really have changed. As long as you don't party too hard. There were Thursday night parties I was tempted to go to but stayed inside to work instead.

Plus, the kid from across the hall partied a lot too. He's a bio E, 20 units first semester, 21 units second semester, maintained 3.9+ GPAs both semesters.

I'd say it's definitely possible. My floor is like 1/3 engineers (I don't live in foothill), and a lot of them do party and still maintain good grades. I think a lot of the engineering hype is overexaggerated...

I agree with phroz3n - I just finished freshman year, so I can only talk about my experience till then (and I haven't taken any upper-divs yet), but I've had plenty of time to party while maintaining a 3.75ish. This semester I've been working 12 hours a week as well, and still done something every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and sometimes in the middle of the week as well. While conventional parties can get boring, at times its just been driinking with the floor and stuff - while I'll admit I didn't get too much work done on weekends (with the exception on Sunday), my personal observation has been if you balance your work out, its not such a big deal. I mean engineering is still amongst the hardest majors on campus (you'll see how easy your non-technicals are compared to technicals), but you can definitely have a decent social life to go along with it.

caughtbehind, hey aren't you international? how did you find a job? I'm trying to find one but it's hard. what do you do? and we're only allowed campus jobs and internships approved through the campus right?

I work at the RSF - I'm not too sure about the formalities, but Rec Sports took care of it. Anyways, as to general job finding tips just keep checking the Cal Jobs site, thats where I found my campus job and my summer internship. Good luck!
