So this is my planned first semester schedule at Cal - a total of 17 units.
Tell me if you think it's gonna be too hard/time-consuming.....

Chem. 4a (4 units)

Chem C96 (1 unit)

Math 53 (4 units)

Linguistics 55 (4 units)

- Chinese 101 (4 units)

TOTAL: [17 units]

My earliest class is Linguistics, which starts @ 9am, and my latest class is a Chem Lab section, from 3-7pm. Oh, and I also live on Clark Kerr campus (:(), to provide some distance perspective.

I reallly wanna take Chinese, but that's the class I'm kinda hesitating about, b/c it isn't required for my major(Chem Eng). Linguistics is to satisfy the A/C requirement.

What do you guys think?

That schedule would be far too rigorous even if you were a senior! Certainly over-doing it for your first semester of college. At a minimum, you should drop Chinese. Languages at call are very very time consuming and generally meet 5 days a week. If you’d like to pursue the language for its own sake (and not because it’s required) you could wait and take Chinese during the summer. Even if you drop Chinese, you should talk your proposed program over with your counselor. I was Rhetoric, so I never took the hard science/math classes, but they are widely known to be extremely rigorous and competitive. Good luck!

Drop Chinese and you have a fairly standard freshmen schedule. Chem 4A is really tough. My friend loved chemistry in high school but changed from ChemE to pre-med after 4A. He’s not a lightweight neither.

Drop the Chinese, take the 13 units, and you’ll still be plenty busy.

Yes, with this schedule, doomed you are!

Schedule sounds fine, you should be okay.

welllll I have decided to drop the Chinese
Thanks, people!

i just hope chem 4a isnt too hard.

Chem 4A is hard… It certainly ruined my first semester experience at Cal.

Chem 4A beats 4B anyday, however.

Just remember though, if you drop Chinese this semester, you won’t be able to take it next semester and thus the earliest you could start Chinese is next fall (or next summer if you take the 10 unit 10 week intensive course).

Edit: Oh wait, I just noticed that you wrote Chinese 101 and not Chinese 1A. I don’t know how frequently 101 is offered. It might be a class you could take in Sp11, it might not (go research it).

Maybe you could take Linguistics as PNP and keep Chinese?

Isnt getting a letter grade better than PNP though?

haha, I’m pretty set on dropping Chinese, so it looks like i’ll be focusing
mainly on chem 4a. I really wanna start studying it over the summer but i dunno which textbook is used, or where any other resources are…

does anyone have any useful chem 4a online materials? IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED :D
