So for those of us ( I know there were a few) that had dropped a course that was necessary for transfer to CAL, I was interested in hearing what your individual Admissions Officers had responded back in regards to your situations.

My situation was that I needed a geography class to become certified, and I had applied for Fall semester at CAL but was admitted to Spring. I had to drop that Geography class and now I will not be certified by the end of the Spring semester like I had originally intended. However, since I am a Spring admit I was hoping that Cal would still let me take the class in the coming semesters at my cc prior to transfer. Well, this is the e-mail I received from my ao in response:

"This drop is not permissible. The class you dropped was necessary to meet your IGETC requirements. Without it you are not eligible for admission and thus your Admission is in jeopardy. Please respond stating in detail why this class was not completed so I may present this information to management to make a decision regarding your admission. It may be possible for you to take the course in Summer or Fall, but I can not make any guarantees. With your correspondence explaining the situation, management can make that decision."

I then proceeded to do as she said and I sent her a long letter addressed "to whom this may concern" detailing my situation. I feel I satisfy the "extenuating circumstances" that you must have to be the exception in this case, but you just never know! Let me know how you guys in the same situation are dealing!

Also, any opinion and/or information from others that aren't in this situation, but would just like to comment, is greatly appreciated.

Nice write up. Check my post history for details about my own issues w/ UCLA. In many ways, they’re similar. Also, there are many people I’ve talked to in those posts that are facing similar situations. I’m curious, what were your “extenuating circumstances,” if I might ask?

thank you! My extenuating circumstance is quite long of a story, but basically I had an online class that in the middle of the semester I had to drop because I lost access too the internet. There was a series of events that made accessing this class impossible, but after missing a test as a result, and having a teacher that refused to let me take the test, despite my current situation, I was forced to drop the class and take a “W” before it resulted in a failing grade and reflected poorly on my GPA. The letter I sent to my ao was three pages long and extremely detailed. I encourage all others in the same situation to do the same. Persistence helps!

my “extenuating circumstances” came as a result of the death (suicide) of my girlfriend’s brother. I think that qualifies. It happened in January. I don’t know about you, but if I were an admissions officer and rescinded someone because of what happened to me, I’d feel pretty bad about it. The same for you, if it’s the truth. Sometimes there are real reasons why people drop classes, and it’s not because they’re slackers. The problem that I see is that admissions probably gets every excuse handed to them that you can think of… lending a certain air of incredulity, if you will, to everyone’s “extenuating circumstances.”

i dropped a bus100 course because i didnt need it anymore. i was taking that bus100 class to satisfy one of my two AA degree requirements that i will be earning this may. im still igetc certified by end of spring and all
