I turned in my GPA Verification Form to my High School last week, and they submitted the wrong GPA. They sent a GPA of 2.57, when in reality I have a 3.57. I notified them 3 days prior to the March 2nd deadline. On the day of the deadline, I asked the grades clerk, and she told me she changed it. However, on the site this thursday, I was awarded Cal Grant B. I am categorized as entitlement (low income, single parent), so I desperately need this money. How am I supposed to correct my GPA? I cannot file an appeal, and the information correction form does not tell me where to put my GPA. Furthermore, it states that I should correct any information online, but I cannot find a link on changing my GPA. Any help is appreciated.

What’s the problem? You got Cal Grant B. That’s worth more than Cal Grant A since the tuition/fees assistance that Cal Grant B does not provide the freshman year is made up by the school itself. For UCs, the Blue&Gold program covers this. I’ve yet to see someone not have their systemwide fees met who had Cal Grant B even during the freshman year.

Cal Grant B provides $1,551 per year on top of the tuition/fee assistance. Despite the lower GPA requirement, it is the Cal Grant meant for very low income families. It is the best one you can get in terms of guaranteed money.

If you’re really concerned about the incorrect GPA, call CSAC and ask them how to go about making sure the information is put proper.

I am not satisified with Cal Grant B because I am more than qualified by Cal Grant A. It’s my school’s fault that I have an incorrect. I will call them tomorrow. Thanks for the reply!

So you want to be switched to the Cal Grant award that gives you less money? Cal Grant A is worth less grant aid than Cal Grant B. Or is this just a pride issue and you just want it to reflect that you qualified even if you aren’t being awarded it? Not trying to sound snarky, just trying to understand why it seems you want to switch to the Cal Grant that gives you less aid than the one you’ve been assigned.

Note that you probably would have been given Cal Grant B regardless of the GPA error since you qualified for it and it is worth more.

EDIT:
Also note that Cal Grant B is not intended for the academically challenged. It is for low-income like yourself. Cal Grant A only has a higher GPA requirement because there are far more students who meet the income and asset ceilings. They have to set the GPA minimum higher or there would be more demand than they could ever even hope to meet.

Since Cal Grant B is for low-income and the asset and income ceilings are so low, the GPA can be set lower as there are fewer that qualify.

I already stated in my first reply to you: Cal Grant B gives more money than Cal Grant A.

Both Cal Grant A and B provide the exact same amount of money for tuition/fee assistance. Cal Grant B technically does not provide this during the freshman year, but it is covered by the school. This is most obvious with the UCs and their Blue&Gold program (a promise that all systemwide fees will be covered through grant and scholarship monies).

Cal Grant B also gives an additional living assistance amount of $1,551 per year currently.

Cal Grant B is worth $6,204 more than Cal Grant A when you factor in that tuition/fee assistance will be covered by the campus itself the freshman year.

There’s nothing wrong in calling to see what you can find out about the GPA correction that was sent if it really is that big of a pride issue to you, but I would say don’t go beyond that. I personally don’t see a reason to since the GPA they have on file is not something anyone else is going to see and will not affect you in any way (unless you really want the award that is worth less money). However, I’m not the one feeling the sting of an incorrectly reported GPA.

I just don’t want them to have the wrong GPA.

Thanks a lot for your response. It helped tremendously. I was just worried that the Blue & Gold would see the Cal Grant GPA. Guess I wasn’t thinking because the UCs have the correct GPA.

One question though, Cal Grant A says they pay for tuition and fees, and on a third bullet they state that they pay 11k for UCs. Is this part of tuition? or is this living expense?

You have to send the UCs your transcripts so yeah, they’ll have your GPA already from their own records :). Definitely call if you want to clear up for your own peace of mind, though. Just wanted to make sure you understood you had the better Cal Grant in terms of grant money so it would be foolish to change it. Good luck!

The tuition/fee assistance is only for systemwide fees (the fees that every UC and CSU charges). It is specifically earmarked for this and cannot be changed to anything else. There are additional campus fees on top of the systemwide fees. Both Cal Grant A and B cover systemwide fees. So yes, that $11k is only for systemwide fees.

Cal Grant B, on the other hand, provides that $1,551 I mentioned for living expenses. It is paid directly to the student and is not applied to any part of your bill. Cal Grant A does not provide this.

Blue&Gold is only going to matter for you freshman year with Cal Grant B. All Blue&Gold is is a promise that systemwide fees will be met through some combination of grant and scholarship money. This counts Cal Grant. Blue&Gold is also useful with mid-year raises in systemwide fees since Cal Grant does not increase its amount mid-year. Took me a bit to finally understand how Blue&Gold worked because the information has remained very vague since the program was started.
