Cal Grant A vs. Cal Grant B

Cal Grant A - Qualified - Not Awarded

Cal Grant B - Not Awarded

Cal Grant C - Not Awarded

1) lame.
2) i don’t get it.

So, after talking with a financial aid person at UCLA, here’s the info I got on Cal Grant B, which is what I was awarded:

If it’s your first time applying for and receiving a Cal Grant, and you get B, then you will only receive the living stipend, about $1500, for the first year. During your second year, you will get more money for tuition and fees.

But, just because you don’t get much in your first year with Cal Grant B, doesn’t mean your gift aid will be less. You could still get aid to cover what the Cal Grant doesn’t. But, as the UCLA FA person said, it all depends on what you get in your ePAL, which is coming out Friday.

If you have specific questions, I recommend calling them. Also, on the school of attendance issue, you have to call them to get it switched.

Hope any or all of this helps. Good luck, and congrats on getting into UCLA!

Cal Grant B - Awarded

Cal Grant C - Not Awarded

I got the same. From what I hear, B is better for community college students because of the $1,500 living stipend. I thought it would switch to A once you transfer, though.

btw, has anyone heard about the Blue and Gold Opportunity? It’s supposed to cover any expenses that Cal Grant doesn’t.

hey did u guys all just create an account or have one prior? since yesterday it says i cant create one :frowning: system down for maintenance!!! grrr

@game_theory - theres a discussion about the blue&gold here

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/703423-did-blue-gold-opportunity-pass-confused.html

Wait so even if you’re a transfer student no a freshman they’ll still only give you 1551 for cal grant B? This is so lame! They’re supposedly giving out cal grant Bs because it financially benefits us more, that’s obviously not true if this is the case…

Okay how messed up is this? I just checked the status again and it went back to application processing.

^ Mine too. It says that the website’s undergoing maintenance, maybe they’ll be back up soon?

It was undergoing maintenance when I first told me what award I got, it’s been undergoing maintenance for like 3 days.

it’s been way longer than that… i remember i checked around 2 weeks ago and the same thing

What kkiiji regarding maintenance and application processing reverting back in the award page.

everyone who got a cal grant what is your gpa?

3.9…Cal Grant A

Award Status: Cal Grant A - Qualified - Not Awarded

Cal Grant B - Awarded

Cal Grant C - Not Awarded

I learned that Cal Grant B is better.
So I was happy because Cal Grant awarded me B and my pre-Fin.Aid gave me B.
However, when it came time to accept my Financial Aid two weeks ago, the school changed it to Cal Grant A.
And they will make Cal Grant change my award from B to A.
I am confused.
What is better?

I was awarded with the Cal Grant B and I accepted it, I went back about a month later to check on my financial aid and I was notified that it had been changed to Cal Grant A.
Cal Grant A gave me more money but it also caused my UCR grant to be slashed in half.
At the end of the day I was left with a couple hundred less than my original award.

Has this happened to anybody else?
Why did my grant change?

The main difference between is that i order to get Cal Grant B you have to have lower EFC
