Cal Grant Awards Are OUT

O gosh…How can I make sure that I still get cal grant?
I didn’t update my cal grant status as UCSD for the year 2012-2013. I just tried to change it and it didn’t let me.

does blue and gold stack with calgrant?

blue and gold is an overall strategy to make sure that your tuition and fees are covered 100 percent if you and your family earn below 80k (supplemental grants even for those who earn under 140k at UCB only). calgrant IS part of the blue and gold guarantee. so no, calgrant does not “Stack” --i repeat myself, but calgrant is not vital for anyone who attends a UC school, calgrant is vital for kids who are attending State schools which do not have Blue and Gold. once you were admitted to a UC school, you were guaranteed that your tuition and fees would be covered if you qualified for Blue and Gold. for some reason conceptually this is hard for students to comprehend, but it seems so simple to me. perhaps because i was so worried about paying tuition that i spent some weeks reading about blue and gold. good luck! anyway, your tuition is covered already—so calgrant is no big deal for us. also, it is VERY important to file for calgrant because that qualifies you for blue and gold. even if you cannot get calgrant–you need to update your GPA each year on their site.

@sadfool
for kids attending a CCC they can apply for cal grants up until september 2nd. and if you qualify it is prorated BACK to the start of the previous semester. but, i have no idea what happens with transfers to a UC. if you were accepted to a UC did the school financial aid offer show a school based Grant that covered your tuition and fees?

calgrant gives me like 12,192, but blue and gold is around 13k+

should i fix my calgrant and do the transfer entitle thingy? or just leave it and enjoy the blue and gold? does it matter since they are not stack?

well, i think the schools benefit from our cal grants because they use less of their other grant money for us? that is my impression. either way, your awards will not go down however they slice it. and who knows, maybe our awards will increase a hundred dollars, or some such, with calgrant. just not anything significant, i don’t think. i am waiting for philosoup to let us know when they update his award package. since he got calgrant.

^ So your’re just thinking it will decrease or slice??
lol

We will get the 13k on top of the money we are receiving from blue gold and that will complete the blue and gold. It’s logical.

I’ve been told that you get either the Blue and Gold OR Calgrant. Not both, because they have the virtually the same purposes- Paying fees and tuitions. I’m not exactly sure, but I’m pretty sure I was told this in a text chat with a UCSC rep of some sort. I had asked them if I didn’t qualify for the Calgrant if I could receive B&G- They said yes, but you only get one or the other anyways. Not sure how it works for every university or if they were qualified to say that, but thats what I heard! Hmmm…

Are CalGrant award amounts dependant on what type of university you’re going to (CSU vs. UC)?

My CalGrant is $13,743, so if I would have applied to a CSU would I still have gotten the same amount? That would be enough to cover tuition and then have the remaining award for things like rent, transportation, etc.

If it helps, the school listed on my award detail is a UC.

Sent from my HTC Evo 3D using CC

only UC schools have blue and gold.

@cosmic bubble you are hilarious. i am sure you can explain that to your financial aid offer and that will be comedy enough.

hey guys,
I have a question.

If my provisional Award Letter says,

Total Estimated Aid:
Total Gift Aid: $23,031

Total NetCost Aid :+$9750

Total Estimated Aid: $32,781

how much do I have to pay?
I am struggling…

@woo325
which UC are you attending? sometimes you can click on the Net Cost (that is the left over portion that you can get work study for, or loans, or both). i have similar aid and when i click on the net cost portion is shows 3100 work study (option) and 5k in subsidized loans. does this make sense? from what you have posted you will need to pay the 9750 out of pocket, or get loans and work study. you should be eligible for 12500 in loans per year if you are a junior.

@northbeach

I am going to attend UCLA this fall.
Basically, I need to pay $9750 out of my pocket huh?
So If I am eligible for Blue & Gold, is that going to cover my $9750??

BTW, Which UC are you attending?

no it’s not going to cover your 9750. blue and gold is just for tuition

@woo325, your package looks like the one i received so your efc is probably 0? my net cost is also 9750 but it is covered by 7750 in loans and 2000 in work study. if you dont take the loans then you will have to cover it on your own. have you checked the breakdown of aid you will be receiving on your epal? the loans and work study should also be included to meet the net cost.

same as angie’s

@woo
okay, so you are expected you to pay your own rent. ahem! haha. if you can’t find work to cover that portion, take the subsidized loans. food for thought, when i first signed up to go to school some years ago, i was expected to pay 100 percent of the costs myself. and i was born in california. so you might make a sigh of relief that the school is paying a whopping 23k per year for you. that is 46 THOUSAND dollars in aid. are you not satisfied? haha okay, i love you dudes. but come on. what is going to happen to you when you get into the work force and have to pay all your own costs? the schools are even paying our health insurance.

Blue and Gold is made up OF Cal Grants, Pell Grants and University Grants, it’s not a separate award.

You guys I am SO confused.

According to the UCLA ePAL I got the following:

  1. UCLA Scholarship Recognition Award
  2. Federal Pell Grant
    → Leaves me with a net cost of about ~10K that I would have to pay on my own

According to the Cal Grant page, I’d be getting about ~12K in a Cal Grant

My question is: Is the Cal Grant part of the gift aid that is listed on my UCLA ePal or is it completely different? Basically, what I want to know is, will I get the UCLA award (1), the pell grant (2) AND the Cal Grant or only certain ones?

so i got my calgrant done, will they change blue and gold thingy? refer to the amount.
