Hey whats up guys, I have a question regarding the Cal Grant. I was recently awarded a Cal Grant B award from the Community College I have been attending for 2 years, but I don't think I qualify. I did not graduate from a California High school, nor attend a California High school. I graduated from a High school in Nevada in 2002. I don't think the California Dream Act applies to me since I'm considered a Natural Born Citizen. I'm also over the age of 28, and I think the eligibility states that one must be under 29. I did not even apply for the Cal Grant, but still was awarded it. My main concern is that I don't want to end up paying it back if it's determined that I am in fact not eligible for it years down the road.

I do appear to meet all other requirements including being a California resident, have a financial need. . . I do already receive the BOG waiver. I tried contacting the Cal Grant agency, still awaiting a response.

So does anybody know why I qualified for one? Thanks for your help.

The eligibility for the Cal Grant is so confusing. One page says you have to graduate from a California High School, while the page below just says you have to be a California resident.

After doing some further research, it appears that the Cal Grant B competitive awards are for non-traditional students, and that graduating from a California High school does not apply. The student must be a California resident for at least one year before applying for the Cal Grant. If anybody has any advice or experience with this, please reply. I just don’t want to pay it back down the road if I’m determined to be ineligible, especially once I transfer to Davis. Thanks

Contact your community college and ask.
You are right in that they will ask for their money back; not right away, but it will come back to haunt you.
Go to you cc and mention what you mentioned here. Tell them you appreciate the offer but you are confused as to how and why you qualified.

Thanks for your reply!

I just got off the phone with the CSAC and they were very helpful in answering my question. In order for a person to receive the Cal Grant B Competitive award, that person just has to be a California resident. Attending a California High School or graduating a California High School does not apply to the competitive awards; it only applies to the entitlement awards. The entitlement awards are only for California High School seniors or graduates who are graduating within a year. I was very fortunate to receive a Cal Grant this year she said as there were only just over 11,000 available and there were over 200,000 people who applied. But I hope this helps anybody who might be in the same situation.
