Yea, they defintely will lower your university grant. You'll basically get the same amount. I'm not sure how they factor in the stipend for Cal Grant B though. I'm waiting for my Cal grant to process too.

If you have work study you can log into the work study website and look for jobs. Typically work study is through the school, although there are some off campus ones as well.

The University Grant will be reduced dollar-for-dollar by whatever Cal Grant monies you receive. This is different from a UG Scholarship. If you have a scholarship, it should work according to the rules changusmc says -- loans and work-study are reduced first.

Oh yea, that's right...now I remember that I was talking about scholarships when I asked the Financial Aid officer.

On a side note: On my offer letter, about 9k of my financial need is met through my Veteran's benefits (MGIB). If I don't use my Veteran's benefits, will the university find some other ways to meet that financial need? Will it be in grants, scholarships, or loans?

Undecided: That is incorrect, unfortunately. I just called FAO and they said they treat UG Scholarships and UG Grants exactly the same way. Each student has a FA cap, and the UG scholarship, grants, and fee waivers will be reduced in order to keep you under that cap. Kinda sucks.

But wouldn't the cap include loans and work study? It doesn't make sense that you would be awarded a separate scholarship and it doesn't change anything.

I wrote to my Cal FA counselor because I just received a small outside scholarship. Here is what she said:

"When a student receives outside awards, we try to first reduce their need
based subsidized loan or work study before reducing their
grants/scholarships unless absolutely necessary."

I was only awarded an UNsubsidized loan, and don't qualify for work study, so who knows what they'll do. I'm really hoping that they reduce my subsidized loan first.

Yea, they do. Here's what the financial aid website says:

"Scholarships you receive from outside Berkeley should be reported on Bear Facts in the "Add Other Resources" section. If you receive outside scholarships your financial aid package will be adjusted. Generally speaking, if your package includes a subsidized loan or a work-study award, those will be reduced before we reduce any university grants or scholarships. (Cal Grant A or B is not considered an outside scholarship.)"
