What kind of disability does your mom have happytrain? I’m deaf

she has nerve damage from work, she had a slipped disk and had to get surgery. now she cant work anymore/ she can barely walk.
i’m sure theres some kind of scholarship or something out there for deaf students? have you tried looking?

^^^ Ah, I see, thanks for sharing. Sorry if it was too personal! I’m just at a loss, as my parents pay for my grandparent’s health insurances, cars, car insurance, all my siblings go to school (3 in hs, 1 in middle school), we still have a mortgage, and are in debt, so although my family’s expected EFC is 4k, I will have to come up with that myself along with that ‘net cost’ - unless I’m not understanding my unofficial aid.

@ postsecret you should just take out loans.

@happytrain I’m sorry for what happened to her. Hope she recovers. And you can only get A or B not both which sucks. I think if we want to live in residence halls we need to take out loans

^^ i dont think cal grant was included in your aid for UCSB. maybe if you get cal grant you wont have to come up with so much on your own? Try getting a job right now and saving up too!! haha thats what im going to do, if i ever find a job.

how do you find jobs? I apply and no one ever calls back

^^^ It was, actually.

Possible Cal Grant Eligibility: $12924
My Unofficial Loan Eligibility is $11862

I need more than that, so I really hope I can petition them to increase it. I thought my tuition would be completely covered under Blue&Gold, so I’m hoping that it will adjust.

did you put on campus or off campus on your FAFSA application? what does it show on your award letter? off campus?

@philosoup thanks i appreciate it
Housing is so expensive and im so mad bc UCR’s cheap apartment housing is already filled up!! im worried its going to be like that everywhere… UCD claims to have guaranteed housing for incoming trasnfers but theyre proabbly expensive as well and they probably dont save the apartments for transfers either.

@Philosoup: Maybe utilize your CC’s career center. There are jobs posted specifically for students (and not elsewhere like on craigslist, indeed, etc.) so I think that it narrows the applicant pool down and people who apply have a better chance of getting an interview, and etc. Also, they have people there that will help and provide other resources!

@uchappytrain yeah but if you take out loans and everything you should be able to attend on a freeride but it’s loans so it sucks. What’s your no.1 school? UCSC is a bit bleh but they give a lot of money for some reason…

@postsecret yeah I should try it. thanks. and I’m getting 5500 from pell grant while you’re getting about 1000. you’re getting 4k in loans to cover it.

I put i was living on campus. man I was seriously hoping I could get Both Cal Grant A & B. I guess we should just apply for scholarships once we enroll. They have scholarships at my CC and they give out 100,000 a year! maybe they will be more generous at UC’s since theyre so expensive.

my list goes like this:

UCSD>UCD>UCSC>UCR

I’m kinda hoping i dont get into UCSD bc theyre the most expensive. and they dont give very much aid. But its a good school :/

UCSD gives about the same aid as UCR. I remember seeing someone with a 0EFC posting a screenshot of his award.

@postsecret did you put off campus or on campus for financial aid? did your award say off campus or on campus? that can make a big difference

@Philosoup: Off-campus - I will be living off-campus wherever I go as it is cheaper than living on-campus. But even if I listed on-campus, unless I provide proof that I will be living on campus, it will adjust to off-campus anyway, I believe?

at least we’re not like some people graduating with 60k+ in loans. If I have to take out loansI’m going to work hard to try to pay them back before I graduate.

Is there anyway once cal grant has been confirmed our financial aid will go up?

^^ That is true. I am extremely grateful that I will essentially have half the debt of new graduates.

@ postsecret I heard off campus housing at UCSB is pretty hard to come by. They do a lottery and if you’re not picked then off to the residence halls I think. Is it possible to get a meal plan while you’re in the apartments? That would be nice.

@uchappytrain our cal grant might be higher than 12k. but maybe tuition might be higher this fall so who knows. and i agree

I looked up the residency halls at UCD and I did find that they offered a triple room, and it was only 10k. if they give me the same fin aid as ucsc I don’t think I would have to take out any loans. I have some money saved up too so that will help. I hope tuition doesn’t go up, but either way blue & gold will cover it right?

@postsecret you should really call and ask why you tuition isnt being fully covered by B&G

yeah b and g will cover the tuition and fees. triple is like 3 people to a room right?
