I was recently notified that I had been disqualified for a Cal Grant entitlement award. I think the main reason why was because of the relatively high amount of assets my family has and our EFC is around $5500. I am hoping to attend a UC school (preferably UCSD), do I have any hope at financial aid? I used the UCSD financial aid estimator and it said my grant award should be around $10,000. Would this be from the university alone? Or did I get screwed out of anything? Help:(

Huh, that’s too low of an EFC to disqualify you financially. What’s your GPA?

My Cal Grant GPA on a 4.0 scale is 3.96. Sooooo :/

Could it be the ASSET CEILING of $67K?

As linked above, the Cal Grant does NOT look at EFC, it looks at income and assets.

Yes, you can still receive financial aid at a UC even when you do not receive a Cal Grant. I cannot predict the amount or speak to the accuracy of the NPC. That said, with an EFC of $5,500 and a student contribution (loans, summer earnings, work/study) of $9,400 http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/paying-for-uc/how-aid-works/estimate-your-aid/index.html , it would not be out of the question that you might receive as much as $10,000 in gift aid.

You can create an account at mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov to see your own CalGrant information. Under the View Award Detail tab, it will tell you the reason for the disqualification, such as ‘Income Over the Ceiling’. You can still get some grants from the UC system under the Blue & Gold program if your income is under $80,000 and you have ‘need’. Since your EFC is relatively low, I’m guessing that you will get some to cover the tuition portion.
