Sorry for the slightly ambiguous title but I just need some assistance in the whole financial aid business. I'm attending a CCC and am about to transfer to a CSU for fall (I only applied to UCI and I'm doubtful on getting in with my meh gpa). I've been accepted to SJSU, CSULB, and CSULA so far and I'm waiting on SDSU and CPP.

So if I fill out the Fafsa form will that also file for the Cal grant aid as well? Will I have to fill out forms for scholarships right now as well even though I'm not entirely sure which university I'm going to?

This website should explain the different Cal Grant options for CSU students:

[CSUMentor - Financial Aid - Step 3 - Cal Grants](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

However, the deadline for applying for Cal Grants was March 2. Both the FAFSA and your CC transcript needed to be submitted by that date - even though you don’t know yet what school you’ll be attending. At this point, you should get in touch with the guidance/transfer counselor at your CC, or the financial aid office at one of the schools you’ve been accepted to (doesn’t matter which one), and find out if there’s any way to still qualify.

If you’ve missed the deadline, you might still qualify for a Competitive Cal Grant award, but those aren’t available to everyone who applies, so there’s no guarantee. You really should get in touch with someone at one of the schools ASAP to find out what you need to do.

Blah, my parents are just now getting their tax forms back so I guess it wouldn’t have mattered anyways… Am I still able to get the Pell grants?

My CC is currently in spring break and I can’t get through to the financial aid officies at the universities for some reason.

I guess I’ll have to take out a loan my first semester then since I also missed the sug grants… :(

You need to contact your school financial aid office ASAP to find out what you might be eligible for and what you need to do to apply. Missing the deadline will not impact your eligibility for federal grants and loans . . . but the impact on eligibility for state aid could be significant. If you don’t apply for the transfer entitlement grant when you first transfer from a CCC to a CSU or UC, I’m not sure if you get to apply later. You need to find out.

Also, FAFSA can be completed with estimated figures, even if your parents don’t have their tax returns done yet.

Lo and behold the financial aid office is closed this week. I’m still trying to get in contact with the csulb office… uggghhhh

wait, I found this in the cal grant faq’s

*Missed the March 2 deadline? There is a secondary deadline, specifically for California Community College students, September 2. Submit the required forms before the September 2 deadline to be considered for this specific Cal Grant. There is a limited number available.

So after some reading apparently I might qualify since my CC automatically sends the GPA verification electronically.

Don’t believe that will help you, since you’re seeking the Cal Grant for your studies at a CSU or UC, and not as a continuing student at a CCC.

And, like I said, doesn’t matter which college financial aid office you call. If CSULB isn’t answering the phone, try a different one. Keep making calls 'til you find someone who’ll answer the phone!

BTW, there are competitive Cal Grants for the UC’s also (and presumably also the CSU’s). Don’t know if those can be awarded to a student who misses the March 2 deadline. Maybe?

You can also try calling the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) directly:

(888) CA GRANT (888-224-7268)

They may be busy this week, but at least they won’t be closed.

Yeah, I just read the sept 2 deadline was only for continuing CC students on the csac website… T_T I called the other universities and they told me to talk to the financial adviser at my CC. I called PCC and they told me that my gpa verification was already submitted on time but the problem is that my fafsa was submitted today (past midnight…). I emailed CSAS what would happen if my fafsa was submitted late and I’m waiting for a response from them now. :\

edit: I called csac directly before emailing them and I was only able to get the automated response.

So it looks like I won’t be able to get the guaranteed cal grants and I’ll have to wait and see if I can get the competitive cal grants.

There’s also the state university grant (SUG) but that was due on march 2 as well so would I have to apply for that next year then?

What about the FSEOG? Is this form of financial aid handled by the university/along with the Pell grants? Because the main site isn’t entirely clear on that part

Basically I only have the pell grant guaranteed right now and I’ll have to get a federal stafford/perkins loan for the first year then…

Is that what CSAC told you? Did you hear back from them?

Don’t know about SUG eligibility, or what happens if you miss the deadline your first year.

SEOG is a federal grant. Limited funds, though, so not everybody gets it.

Yeah that’s what csac told me when I called them. For the SUG I might get some limited funds for the late application but I’m not sure right now since that’s dependent on which university I go to.

Sorry it’s not better news . . . but at least you’ve got a shot at getting some funding.

Good luck to you!!!

Thanks, I have the pell grant anyways and I’m most likely commuting so I pretty much only have to worry about the tuition (excluding misc costs) fees. I suppose I can view it in a different way, at least I’m not like my friend who’s going to Westwood college and accumulating over 70k in debt haha.
