Cal grant question

Hi. My family got a total of about 40k in terms of scholarships from the college that I will be attending. I checked the website for Cal grant and it said that if I graduate from my high school, I will be awarded about 8K in terms of grants. So my question is this: will my college reduce their aid and replace some of it with the grant, or will they give me the 40K scholarship and the 8k scholarship? My family's income is about 60K, and my brother will also go to a UC next year. My family also doesn't own a home, or any other assets. Thank you for reading this.

anyone?

I really need an answer for this.

My son is at Cal Poly. Their web site says that the Cal grant will replace the university grant.

@3youngguns My school is a private LAC. The award that I currently have fully covers tuition, but the housing, which is about 15K, is left for my parents. My family’s EFC is much lower and I’m not sure what to do. Does the Cal Grant A even cover housing btw? Thank you for reading this

Cal Grant is an entitlement grant. That means that if you qualify, you get it. Doesn’t matter which of your college expenses you use it for.

But as to whether or not the Cal Grant will reduce your college grant, you need to ask the college financial aid office! And you need to ask them now, so you have the information you need to make a decision.

@dodgersmom thank you so much for your info! I have already committed to the college, since they offered me the best financial aid offer (much cheaper for me to attend it than any of the other UCs). I just wanted to know if the Cal grant will be reducing my scholarship. From what I’ve heard, they are very nice in terms of giving extra money if one appeals, which I might do if my brother’s UC tuition goes in the 20K range (he’s a transfer student and my family doesnt know how much money they will give him for the upcoming year).

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you get to keep the Cal Grant and all of your college grant . . . good luck!!!

@dodgersmom thank you!
