Cal Grant

I'm not 100% sure if I'm eligible for a cal grant. I went solely to community colleges and completed all my units by the end of the 2009 - 10 year. I then took a gap year (no classes taken) and tried to save up money. The last requirement for the cal grant is what's scaring me: "attend a California Community College during the 2010 - 11 year and then transfer and attend at a qualifying California institution that offers a bachelor’s degree for the 2011 - 12 year." That means I'm disqualified from the cal grant, right? Would taking a summer school class allow me to qualify for the grant?

Here are the transfer entitlement program requirements:
You received award consideration because we received a California Community College GPA of at least 2.40. In addition, every Transfer Entitlement Cal Grant recipient must also meet all of the following:
• graduate from a California high school (unless military orders required the student or the student’s parent or guardian to be out of state at the time of graduation), or complete a high school graduation equivalency (including GED or the California High School Proficiency Exam) on or after July 1, 2000;
• be a California resident at the time of high school graduation or its equivalent,
• attend a California Community College during the 2010 - 11 year and then transfer and attend at a qualifying California institution that offers a bachelor’s degree for the 2011 - 12 year.

You were not in school this past year so you don’t qualify. Besides, your school would have had to submit your GPA for verification and they won’t do that if you’re not enrolled in any classes. Cal Grants have already been disbursed so no there’s no way for you to get one even if you enroll in Summer session.

I have an EFC of 0 and can’t imagine being able to go to school without something, at least the possibility of a loan. I know the Blue and Gold program requires you to have completed the GPA verification the same as the Cal Grant. Is there any way I could do the verification now and appeal? Would my assumption that it would have already been sent because of my UC application be strong enough for an appeal? Is it possible that my UC may offer me something because I’m obviously not getting any grants to help cover UC fees?

If your efc is 0 why aren’t you getting the undergrad scholarship directly from the school? I thought you should get full pell grant and the school should cover the remaining cost of attendance. That’s how mine is since I didn’t qualify for cal grant either.

I also have an EFC of 0 not to mention a ton of other things that would make me appear as if I should have received a Cal grant but I didn’t either. It is NOT given to every student that needs money but to students who need it the most (they take into account your background, and the number of dependents that you and your family have which is what sets most students apart - not just an EFC of 0). Cal Grants have nothing to do with loans. Your financial aid report from the UC should say what you are eligible for (subsidized loans or unsubsidized if you are not receiving any grants) and you can always get an outside loan.

All of these questions should be directed to the financial aid office of your school. This is why the financial aid office exists in the first place, to help students with these questions. :)
