Cal Grant...?!

Sorry, I'm sure these questions has been repeated countless number of times. Too lazy to look around for it.

So how exactly do you "apply" for a Cal Grant? Because from what I know, all we need to do is wait for our schools to send in the verified GPA (or submit it ourselves if the school doesn't do it for us) after we submit our FAFSAs...

So does this mean that we have "applied" for a Cal Grant once they've received our GPAs? I submitted my FAFSA last night so... if CG doesn't receive my GPA by the 2nd, I won't be eligible for things like Blue & Gold...?

Also, the website is down - it won't let me create an account.
Whether you create an account or not doesn't affect your eligibility, right? The website is only for you to manage and check status, yes? I know it sounds stupid, but I just need it to be clarified.

Thanks!

Step 1: Submit a FAFSA
Step 2: Submit a GPA verification form to the Commission. But most schools already do this for you so u prolly dont have to do this.
Step 3: Create an account on the cal grant site and check the progress…if you can’t create an account then u shouldn’t have waited till the last minute

the blue and gold is totally different from pell/cal grant. that programs is designed to cover up the remaining fees if the pell/cal grants dont give u enough to cover ur tuition. but u must have applied for the cal grant in order to be eligible for the blue and gold plan

also the blue and gold is designed primarily for the mid-middle class. yes, there is a mid-middle class now, along with low-middle class and high-middle class. it’s basically intended for families making $60-69,999 a year. if ur family makes less than 60,000, ur gonna get alot of money from the pell/cal grant so u wont get anything from the blue and gold anyway since u get more money than wut the tuition costs.

is fafsa due by the beginning of tuesday or by the end of tuesday like at 12 midnight?

Angrystudent13 , I’m asking myself the same question :frowning:
If you find out, please tell :)

holy cow, i didn’t know we had to make a webgrants account. i completed my FAFSA and made sure the cal grant GPA form is in already, can i make the account later? lakerforever24, you make it seem like i’m screwed if i don’t make an account before, am i??!?!?

I doubt you have to make an account to be elegible. Since all it is for is to check your status.

My friends that did receive cal grants last year all made accounts after the March 2nd deadline.

Now can you help me out if the form is due beggining or end of Tuesday?

From my personal experience:
March 2, 2009 - I submitted my FAFSA. Yes. I waited until the last day. And I did not check to see if my school submitted my GPA.
B October 2009** - On the third revision of my financial aid package for UCSC (yes, third. And there were five more revisions after that for no obvious reason), Cal Grant was added as a part of it and it reduced my UCSC grant.
B November 2009** - Received a “to do” item to submit a “high school verification” form to prove I graduated as a California resident from a California High School.
B November 2009** - Created my account to access my Cal Grant information so I could submit said requested form.

So more than half a year after the deadline for FAFSA and Cal Grant GPA verification, I created my account. You only need to access it to check on the status of your award and to submit any additional information required (such as the California High School verification). But I recommend creating the account as soon as you are able to. The interesting thing on my Cal Grant information after I finally created the account, though, was that both my community college and UCSC had apparently submitted my GPA. Very curious considering my official admittance occurred several months after the GPA deadline.

And yes, submission of both the FAFSA and Cal Grant GPA verification are required to be eligible for Blue and Gold.

Thanks Kender!

The big reason why I want to create an account is to make sure that they’ve received my GPA by March 2. From what I know, I have to wait for the FAFSA to be processed in order for my school to get the thumbs up to send my CG GPA… And it hasn’t been processed yet. I’m mostly concerned that it won’t be in by tomorrow and will affect my eligibility for B&G.

AngryStudent & thisisu: I would suggest submitting FAFSA by tonight because it takes about a day to process them. I’m not really sure if processing = “submitting” but, to be on the safe side, I’d advise you to do so.

Quick question: I submitted a FAFSA and my Cal grant has been processed. My gpa is 3.76 (UC: 3.74), but my family makes a pretty substantial amount of money (but with 3 kids). Do you guys think we’ll get any money from the Cal Grant?

thisisu, im pretty sure fafsa is due tuesday night tommorow now. whew!

edelynly: Since I did not go to the effort of ensuring that my GPA had been submitted (my community college did it for me automatically), I am not aware of it from experience having to be done after the FAFSA has been processed. However, I would still speak with your school to ensure the GPA has been sent as the deadline is March 2 for the GPA verification. And I can find nothing that says “FAFSA must be processed before GPA verification can be submitted.” For what it’s worth, all that’s needed for renewal is submission of the FAFSA once you’ve been granted the money so it should be much easier in subsequent filings if you receive a Cal Grant through this one.

emilsinclair9: This is a list of the income ceilings for all three Cal Grants: http://www.csac.ca.gov/facts/2010-11IncomeCeilings.pdf

AngryStudent13: Yes, the deadline is March 2 at 11:59pm PST. General rule of thumb with deadlines: if no time is specified, it’s always the very end of the day. If someone tries to tell you otherwise, you can point out that the later time is still technically March 2. However, if you are mailing in anything rather than it being filed through your school*, you will be bound by the post office’s closing time that day.

*If you are having to request your school to submit the GPA for you, obviously you are bound by their office hours as well. So the 11:59pm time is kind of a moot point ;)

Oh GAWD I am an idiot… I was reading this going, “Oh well, March 2nd is so far away though!” Doh!!!

I created an account just now and LUCKILY my school submitted for me apparently! Wow, did I get lucky!

Does anyone know when the award details are typically announced?

i just went on the fafsa site and it said that it was actually due tommorow at 10 pm if you send it in electronically. just warning you guys.

kernlsanders: how did you create your account? It doesn’t work for me…?!

I think your FAFSA has to be received for your account to work. I tried multiple times to make an account and it didn’t work and then randomly one time about a week after I submitted my FAFSA it let me make an account. When I checked it they said they received my FAFSA and GPA verification. I’m pretty sure you just need for them to have processed your FAFSA for you to be able to make an account and seeing as you sent yours in recently it might take a few more days before you can check the status (though you submitted before the deadline so you’re all good).

^ Hm, yeah. My FAFSA was actually officially processed today. Guess I’m going to have to wait a few more days and just cross my fingers…

i made one a few hours ago and i was able to log in right away no problemo!

mbe, when did you submit your FAFSA?

last thursday. i can see that my fafsa and calgrant are submitted.
