If you guys really think you’re going to be spending the majority of your days here with hippies you’re beyond mistaken. You get to choose your own circles. Whoever said they were a “modern-day hippie” and that your friend was some fake, why does it bother you? There’s plenty of hipsters roaming the campus, but I’m sure it’s JUST as bad in LA. This is the dumbest thread I’ve seen on this forum in a while. I’ve been here for two years and haven’t had to put up with any hippie crap aside from the random Green Peace people asking you to sign petitions. The only person who said something that made any sense was the one that said UCLA and Berkeley’s student bodies were pretty similar.

I want to close this thread

@Cantabilen
Not necessarily. Weed is assuredly a way of life in Northern California, but I get the feeling that once you get out of LA, SoCal’s drug of choice is meth :P

False Dichotomy (aka False Dilemma, Bogus Dilemma, Bifurcation, Black-and-White, Either-Or) fallacy. Plus there are tons of nor-cal transplants who attend UCLA and so-cal transplants who attend Berkeley.

@darkstorn

That is b/c in LA the kush and purp was twice the price compared to bay area prices for quite a while. That has changed with all the clubs competing for clients tho.

LOL @ weed is evil but popping pills from the parents medicine cabinet is alright amongst the mollycoddled middle class crowd so prevelant today is too funny to many from nor cal.

Besides the transplants, the dichotomy would be better propositioned as…whether one would want to be bombarded with stupid memes…

Cal: “hella” or
UCLA: ‘like omg’

Asian hippies?

Anyhow, UCLA is not conservative…it’s more liberal, lots of Dems, but really good mix of everything.

a super common semantic error in California that tends to be regional than worldwide in connotation…small ‘l’ liberal does not equal Liberal nor does it equate with just Dems.

Another myth that has been debunked over and over again is that all Asians are smart math nerds or straight laced. There are tons of Asians in nor cal that party down with white people and smoke blunts on a daily basis that are still A students. It all depends on how self motivated and responsible the individual is.

Overall, I did find more diversity in nor cal than so cal when it comes to people of different ages (and sex) and cultural backgrounds mingling together without the petty issues(racial and class based), clickiness, or sexual hangups i encountered in so cal.

anyone who says there isn’t a big hippie culture in berkeley is full of ****. That being said though, the student bodies are pretty similar. LA is a very dynamic city and the various parts of it are all different. Depending on where you go, you’ll run into different types of people (compare glendale to westwood to downtown to santa monica to silverlake, etc.)

i’m sure berkeley has something similar, but it’s not exactly the same. I do agree that there’s plenty of people who come both from norcal and socal from both schools though. i see people all the time wearing “Cal” sweaters. And i myself think i might want to take a semester at UCLA (mainly to take a class with a professor who teachers a class i’m very interested there that isn’t available here)

lol im pretty sure every university in california are mostly liberal. And having a more ‘conservative’ thought pattern is a slowly dying breed. In the end rationality will win, hopefully.

ideas about what is considered ‘liberal’ or ‘conservative’ are qualitative and tend to even flip flop each generation on how issues are framed with divide and conquer tactics. A dog and pony show for the masses to politicize them into picking a side when its really a farce.

The Bay Area is so big, I don’t understand how it’s possible for people to generalize. I do like the people around the Bay Area though. Living here my entire life, most people I have met are all very left-wing…just the way I like it.

Hipsters in Berkeley?

Hippies yes, but go down Westwood Blvd. (UCLA) and you find yourself all of a sudden dressed in skin tight black jeans, a 12in. cut vneck shirt, ray bans and a wanna be ironic pithy sense of humor.

bahaha. well it has to be the right vneck or the fashion police will get ya. I remember when lived in Westwood and on the Sunset the new chic fashion was big furry boots, big sunglasses, glamor style jacket, bare or fishnet, skirt and/or sexy satin lingerie with those cool but friv lacey patterns. Made sense for so cal but people in colder regions started emulating the style and froze their tushes off. For too tight jeans you need to go to SF which beats Berkeley in that category altho LA beats SF for emo haircuts and matching clothes.

This thread is idiotic.
