My son has the good fortune of acceptance to 3 great schools: CAL, Harvard and Brown. Obviously, Harvard and Brown are a great opportunites, however, my son is not so sure he wants to go to school so far away from home (we live in San Francisco). In addition to distance, he wants to make his decision based on his ultimate career goal of working in some capacity in government public policy.

Please share any impressions you have on the 3 schools in that area. BTW, money is not an issue. Thanks!

If it deals with government public policy, AND he will get a job here rather than on the east coast, Berkeley would be the best.

However, Harvard is really unbeatable if he's going to go into the private market.

Even if money isn't an issue, you have to realize that if he goes to Berkeley, you'll be able to see him every weekend, as opposed if he goes to Brown or Harvard.

In GENERAL, I'd say that a
Harvard degree>Berkeley degree>Brown degree

HOWEVER< if I were in your son's position and will certainly be working in government public policy,
Berkeley>Harvard>Brown

I would suggest thinking about Harvard for graduate school perhaps. Harvard's Kennedy School of Government is definitely one of the best in the nation. If he chooses to go to Harvard for his undergrad years, he may even get the opportunity to take some graduate courses in his four years there.

Making the assumption that money is not a factor, Harvard would be the place to be. Not to mention Boston provides great resources (not that San Francisco doesn't).
